It seems that much like Hollywood is obsessed with the ‘80s remake so has the video game world become obsessed with the HD remake. Taking classics from every genre and updating them with today’s graphical sheen, developers are able to squeeze a little extra cash from gamers for those titles they have the fondest memories of.

Taking a page from the most recent Sly Cooper Collection HD remake comes a rumor suggesting Jak and Daxter the popular PS2 platformer from Naughty Dog might be headed the way of an HD remake. Starring a partially mute, yellow-haired protagonist and a precocious ottsel (part otter, part weasel), Jak and Daxter was arguably the first in a long line of successful platformer series like Ratchet and Clank and the aforementioned Sly Cooper.

While getting our hands on the franchise that was steeped in a rich mythology — one that involved various Eco colors and a trek through Jak’s past — sounds promising, this rumor should be taken with a large grain of salt.

There’s no questioning Sony’s proclivity for remaking its popular PS2 franchises (God of War, Ico and Shadow of the Colossus just to name a few) in HD, but you have to feel that some properties just aren’t going to make the cut.

The situation does seem familiar -- a developer with a new title dropping soon has one of their previous successes released in HD -- but only time will tell. And obviously Jak and Daxter’s developer Naughty Dog are too busy putting the finishing touches on Uncharted 3, which would require the project be handled by a new developer.

So, take this rumor as you will, but know that there is definitely a market for Jak and Daxter (at least the first three titles) in HD, but there’s also the possibility of this never coming to pass. Getting to re-experience Jak’s growth from playing second fiddle to fully fledged bad ass would be pretty fantastic, but we always have our memories to go by.

What do you think of an HD remake of the Jak and Daxter trilogy? Would you like to see the Daxter PSP game and the Jak cart racing game included with the collection?
