Jason Mantzoukas may have only played a minor character in Rex Splode in the Prime Video hit Invincible, but that does not mean playing such a character was just another role for the actor. In fact, it meant so much more to him.

Before Invincible took the world by storm during its epic first season thanks to the original material it brought to the superhero genre last year, Mantzoukas knew all too well about the comic and its story. That's why, when Invincible author Robert Kirkman asked Mantzoukas to play one of the show's characters, the actor was beyond ecstatic

In an interview with Collider, Mantzoukas said that being involved in the series was a "dream come true" for him. "This is a book that I digested over the course of 15 years. And this story is so familiar to me, and I love it. And when Robert asked me to do the [TV] series, I reread the whole [comic book] series again and loved it even more." Mantzoukas then praised Kirkman and the show for the direction it's going, believing it's going to be one of the best shows ever made. "What I'm loving about the [TV] series is what they're choosing to include, where they're choosing to have us go on this massive journey that exists that I understand where it could go. But I'm delighted with what stories Robert is interested in telling inside of the ‘Invincible’ world. I think this is going to be a truly iconic show.”

Invincible Jason Mantzoukas Rex Splode

Even though he was not much of a featured character compared to Mark Grayson or his Father Nolan, Mantzoukas' character Rex Splode went through a good character arc in Invincible. He went from being a cocky superpowered being who cheated on his girlfriend with their teammate to one who learned the hardship of becoming a full-fledged hero. He takes responsibility for his power and works himself up as a good teammate upon his promotion to becoming one of the new Guardians of the Globe.

Invincible has taken a few liberties compared to the graphic novel in its first season, and they left a lot open-ended when the first season ended. So that makes one wonder where the show will go with Rex Splode's story. Even though he had a douchey persona at first, the show made it clear that he recognized that he made a mistake when he cheated on Eve and started taking things more seriously as time went on. If they continue to go that route, he may go from the one hero many fans wanted to see get everything coming to him to the one hero whose impending death is the one they dreaded the most.

The last scene of Invincible season 1 hinted that the world would only expand from here. If they do, Rex may get more screen time. Does he start getting along with Mark more after initially being jealous of him? Does he have a limit for how heroic he is? Does he continue to struggle with his hubris? There are so many different routes to explore with his character much like there are with everyone else. Invincible started with a bang. Let's see if they can keep it going.

Invincible season 1 can currently be streamed on Amazon Prime.
