Insomniac Games has given PlayStation gamers quite a few memorable franchises throughout its existence. Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank, and the more recently the Resistance series, have all been held near and dear to gamers' hearts for years. Unfortunately, everything has to come to an end at some point — including Insomniac's association with the Resistance franchise.

During an interview with VG247, Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price stated that his company would no longer be behind the wheel of future Resistance games. Just in case anyone was curious, Ted left absolutely no room for speculation, and made that fact very clear in the following no-nonsense statement: "We won’t be making any more Resistances." See, there's absolutely no hope left after that extremely straightforward, and mildly soul crushing, comment.

Gamers are more than welcome to speculate on just why Insomniac plans on leaving the Resistance franchise to Sony and moving on, but poor sales for Resistance 3 are likely the culprit. The developer may have been quick to defend the weak sales of the game, but it's obvious now that this monetary dilemma may have taken a bigger toll than initially expected.

And those who are drastically concerned over the well-being of the Resistance series shouldn't have any fears, because Sony still owns the rights to the games and they invest heavily in their first-party exclusive franchises. There is even a new installment, Resistance: Burning Skies, scheduled to hit the PS Vita sometime in the near future, so it's obvious that the Resistance games can be continued for many more years to come. However, we know now for sure that Resistance 4 won't be developed by Insomniac Games.

When I spoke to Resistance 3's creative director Marcus Smith last year, he made it clear that Insomniac Games wanted to move on from sequels, and really push the boundaries with fresh properties. The first swing at a new property will appear in the form of Overstrike; it will also be the first game the infamous PlayStation developer ships for Xbox 360. Hopefully the title will live up to the company's impressive pedigree, and move significantly more units than R3 managed to. Only time will tell.
