Even after releasing the definitive fighting game for fans of DC Comics, the developers of Injustice: Gods Among Us are continuing to add fighters to the core game. For their next batch of downloadable content, NetherRealm is setting the newest incarnation of Superman - the one currently ruling the summer box office in Man of Steel - in their sights.

This July sees the release of the 'Man of Steel' Superman skin, modeled after the one worn by the film's star Henry Cavill, as well as a new fighter in the form of the film's main antagonist, General Zod. Injustice's re-imagined take on Zod isn't the same one depicted in the film, but the gameplay trailer released proves that he's every bit as deadly.

General Zod had been previously rumored as one of the planned DLC fighters, following on the heels of Lobo, Batgirl, and Mortal Kombat mascot Scorpion. The developers took the opportunity to add their own unique flair in designing each comic book or video game mainstay, and for the most part, successfully incorporated each into the larger Injustice aesthetic.

General Zod Injustice DLC

Although this version of General Zod shares some strong attributes with more recent comic book designs (the goggles), and features plenty of nods to the Phantom Zone and his penchant for 'kneel-commanding,' this take is a unique one - based on hairstyle alone.

If nothing else it's nice to know that regardless of movesets or balancing, Injustice now possesses one character whose in-game persona seems as unimpressed with Superman as the comics dictate he should be. Movie fans may be disappointed that the hulking Kryptonian battle armor seen in the film won't be adapted into the game's grittier art style (since it would arguably fit quite well), but will hopefully take solace in the 'Man of Steel' skin also coming to the game in July.

Take a look:

The developers have captured the detail of the film's costume down to the last stitch, so there's no question that given Man of Steel's ongoing success, there will be plenty of fans marking the as-yet-unannounced release date on their calendars. When NetherRealm provides a more specific release date, we'll keep you informed.

Which DC heroes or villains would you most like to see added next? The obvious answer is Zod's right-hand-woman Faora, but we won't be holding our breath.

The General Zod DLC goes on sale on Xbox Live and PSN in July for $5, with the 'Man of Steel' Superman skin retailing for $1.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is available now for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
