Besides confirming a finalized roster for Injustice: Gods Among Us, we're very curious to hear what NetherRealm Studios has crafted as the story set-up for their upcoming fighting game. Though watching superheroes and super villains do battle is nothing new, NetherRealm's Ed Boon has suggested there is a specific reason as to not just why these characters — like Superman, Catwoman, and Nightwing — are fighting each other, but why a super powered character like Wonder Woman can go toe-to-toe with someone like Lex Luthor.

While we still don't have an official answer to those questions, we are getting closer and closer thanks to the reveal of a new prequel comic that is said to introduce the story for Injustice: Gods Among Us. Only the first few pages of the comic have been released so far — the full issue #1 goes on sale tomorrow — but even in such a short amount of time NetherRealm sets this world up as their own invention.

In fact, they aren't willing to treat any of the DC Comics Universe's with "kid gloves" either, as evidenced by the death of Jimmy Olsen (at the hands of the Joker) in the first few pages. Needless to say, if gamers were expecting the type of light-footed effort that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was, they should think again.

To be fair, the exchange between Batman and Superman over Lois being pregnant is a bit cheesy, but we suspect the intention is to first establish the close bond between Supes and Bruce Wayne before they come to blows. How someone like Solomon Grundy or Cyborg gets thrown into the mix is yet another element we're curious to discover, but putting Superman and Batman front and center is a smart idea.

But even after the prequel comic, there's still presumably some story component to Injustice that will fuel the overarching narrative of the game. Mortal Kombat 9, for example, found a way to have gamers play as almost every character in a story mode that revolutionized the fighting game genre.

As was mentioned before, issue #1 of the Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel comic hits brick-and-mortar and digital retailers tomorrow, so those interested to see how Joker and Harley Quinn's plan (whatever that may be) impacts the DC Comics Universe can find out very soon.

Will you be picking up the Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel comic? How would you like to see NetherRealm explain all this superhero infighting?

Injustice: Gods Among Us releases April 16, 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
