NetherRealm Studios continues to roll-out Injustice: Gods Among Us character reveals. Following two days behind the announcement of Shazam, the developer has also officially unveiled the King of Atlantis, Aquaman as a playable combatant. The trailer, which can be viewed above, also gives fans an idea of how exactly the underwater superhero fits into the larger Injustice: Gods Among Us story along with standard looks at his battle stage and special moves.

Interestingly, the Aquaman trailer coincided with a tease from studio-head Ed Boon - leading to a pair of blurry images that seem to hint at another unique level element (like the Killer Croc Arkham Asylum hazard) as well as standalone brutish-looking character.

Check out the blurry images below, courtesy of the Noob viral marketing page, followed by our respective breakdown of what/who the screengrabs likely depict:

Fans are already hard at work matching the images against long-running DC Comics lore but the most telling piece of information could have actually come from Boon one day prior when he tweeted about a "BIG" reveal tomorrow (now today). Obviously Boon was talking about Aquaman but he's also been known to choose his words carefully and could have been preparing his followers for larger-than-normal side characters as well.

It's pretty safe to assume that the first image, depicting two fighters (one female, one male) locked in combat actually shows size-shifting characters Giganta and Atom Smasher. In this case, the two fighters would probably be relegated to level elements, seen in the background - likely with an interactive hazard function: i.e. players could get knocked through a skyscraper window only to be swatted around by the two building-sized characters on the way down. Given the recognizable look of Atom Smasher, coupled with the scenery in the blurred image (which frames the characters in the city skyline), lesser guesses like Cheetah (for the female character) seem like a stretch.

The second image is a bit more mysterious but the bulky figure and gold armor, not to mention blackish-blue skin, draw a pretty clear line to Gorilla Grodd.

Grodd isn't the most famous character in the DC stable but could prove to be a fun addition to the fighting game roster - assuming that he's actually playable. At this point, it's hard to imagine that NetherRealm would give the character a mainline slot, especially with the amount of over-sized "bruisers" already present in the list - Bane, Solomon Grundy, and Lex Luthor (so far). As a result, until we hear something official, expect Grodd to be another interactive stage hazard (possibly in the same sequence as Giganta and Atom Smasher). Of course, that wouldn't rule the character out as possible DLC down the line - stranger things have happened at NetherRealm Studios (cough: Freddy Krueger in Mortal Kombat).

For the time being, the only confirmed roster addition today is Aquaman - who looks to draw some inspiration from Mortal Kombat's latest iteration of Rain (Aquaman borrows a variation of both his Water Blast and Shocking Bolt special moves). While Aquaman is often ridiculed by non-fans for being an awkward and outdated member of the Justice League, regular readers of the character as well as anyone who has been following the New 52 re-launch can testify that the King of Atlantis has delivered more than his fair share of kick-butt action.

Sure, he's saddled with a semi-cheesy setup but in the Injustice: Gods Among Us ring, Aquaman could easily turn out to be a fan-favorite combatant.
