NetherRealm Studios creative director and Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon takes to Twitter to tease fans about the possibility that Injustice 2 is in development.

As E3 2016 draws nearer, the evidence in favor of an Injustice 2 reveal at the event continues to mount. This time the possibility of the project is being teased by NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon, who has changed his profile picture on Twitter to hint at the existence of Injustice 2.

Boon's new profile picture on Twitter features the Roman numeral "II" - which seems like an obvious nod to Injustice 2. A fan inquired about it, and Boon suggested the profile picture is instead a reference to Mortal Kombat 11, but if it were, Boon wouldn't be saying so, making it all the more likely that Injustice 2 is set for a proper reveal soon.

Previous rumors point to Injustice 2 releasing in March 2017, which means that a reveal at E3 next week seems like the most likely scenario. However, with Warner Bros. Interactive opting out of an E3 2016 press conference, it will be interesting to see whether Microsoft or Sony showcases the game. Alternatively, Injustice 2 could be announced right before E3, with a demo for attendees to play on the show floor, or it could be revealed a little bit later in the year instead.

Regardless of when Injustice 2 is officially announced, it seems like a given at this point that the game is in development. However, what remains to be seen is what form the game will take, and if it will invoke the same dark themes as the original did.

After all, the story of the original Injustice: Gods Among Us didn't end with the video game. On the contrary, DC launched a whole comic series fleshing out the Gods Among Us world, and so at this point, it would seem a little odd to return to that same world for Injustice 2. Considering this, perhaps NetherRealm will aim to create a less bleak tone for the followup to differentiate itself from the first game.

Evidence for this possible new approach may be found with the supposed leaked image of a Superman game. That image shows a character biography for the titular Superman, but maybe instead of being for a standalone Superman game, it's for Superman's character page in Injustice 2. If so, the art style seen in the leaked image would suggest an overall lighter tone than the first Injustice, but we won't know for sure what direction Injustice 2 is taking until the game has its proper unveiling.

No matter what tone Injustice 2 uses, fans are sure to be excited about the project. The first Injustice earned strong reviews, and was the top-selling game in its month of release, so the sequel should have some decent hype behind it. Hopefully Ed Boon gets the hype train rolling by offering substantial details on the potential Injustice 2 project by E3 or not long after.

Injustice 2 is rumored to be in development for unspecified platforms.
