Hyrule Warriors is one of the most hotly anticipated titles coming out for the Wii U. A spin-off of the Zelda series, it gives players the chance to enter the world of Hyrule once more, this time in a more combat-driven, Dynasty Warriors-style hack-and-slash. Early trailers make the game look very enjoyable, and fans of The Legend of Zelda can look forward to seeing Link make a rare appearance outside of Zelda games and the Super Smash Bros series.

Nintendo and Tecmo Koei have promised a wealth of features for Hyrule Warriors, including a weapon crafting system and a story befitting of the epic franchise. However, no game emulating the action of Dynasty Warriors would be complete without an army of characters to choose from. A new trio of characters has just been revealed, and their names are sure to be familiar to fans of The Legend of Zelda.

According to Japanese magazine Famitsu, players of Hyrule Warriors will be able to call on the help of three classic characters from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time — a game that some see as Nintendo’s Zelda magnum opus. It brings the roster up to ten playable characters.

The most well-known of the new characters is Sheik. Sheik is Princess Zelda’s alter-ego, disguising herself as a member of the Sheikah clan to escape Ganondorf and to help Link on his quest. Sheik is playable in Super Smash Bros Melee and Brawl as a transformation of Zelda, and will return in Super Smash Bros for the Wii U as her own separate character.

Alongside Sheik, gamers will also have the chance to play as Darunia, who somewhat reluctantly helps Link on his quest in Ocarina of Time. Darunia is the leader of the Gorons, a race of mountain-dwelling rock creatures. The final new addition to the character roster is Princess Ruto. Ruto is a member of the ocean-dwelling Zoras, and was once — albeit temporarily — engaged to Link.

There is no footage of the new characters as of yet — all we know is from the pages of Famitsu. However, given the character-revealing trailers we have for Hyrule Warriors so far, more details are to be expected soon. Here’s hoping that developers Team Ninja and Omega force can bring in some of Darunia and Ruto’s Sage abilities.

It all bodes well for the Nintendo/Tecmo Koei collaboration. It’s looking like an impressive spin-off of the beloved franchise, although it remains to be seen as to whether Hyrule Warriors will be able to sell its target of over one million copies. In the meantime, gamers interested in checking out the title will be able to at Comic-Con, alongside a Super Smash Bros tournament.

Hyrule Warriors will be released on September 26 in North America, exclusively on Wii U.
