Kaos Studios Confident DLC & Multiplayer Will Help Homefront Sales

Kaos Studios’ latest title Homefront has been surrounded with negative press since publisher THQ saw a massive dip in its stocks during the first day of Homefront’s release. This didn’t stop it from selling a total of 375,000 copies in North America alone during its launch day.

This relatively impressive success was almost mired by a second day price drop that came out of left field. Many were quick to assume that the price drop was a result of failure by the new IP, but THQ later clarified that it was just the retailers trying to capitalize on the release of a new game.

Kaos Studios doesn’t seem to be affected by any of the drama associated with reaching THQ’s break-even point of 2 million units sold. Instead, Kaos is focusing on the future of Homefront as General Manager David Votypka revealed during an interview with CVG.

With Homefront requiring a pass for players to fully enjoy online play, the topic of used games has been a rather touchy when it comes to Homefront. Votypka is confident that it may not even be an issue that affects the majority of the player-base, since most gamers will want to keep the game anyway.

“I think the multiplayer and the length of that, plus the upcoming DLC is a strong reason to keep the game. The multiplayer has a fairly long unlock tree, it has a lot of replayability and certainly we’re going to support the title with DLC as well going forward. So I think there will be a pretty strong reason to keep Homefront in the disc tray.”

Not much is known of the Homefront DLC yet, apart from an exclusivity contract with Microsoft that would see the DLC reach Xbox 360 owners first. Votypka maintains that the product stands on its own merits regardless.

“You have to have a strong single-player and multiplayer component for $60. We feel that ultimately we wanted to make a game that people felt, ‘yes, I want to spend my $60 on that product.’ We think what we’re delivering in Homefront is really compelling and also a lot of fun.”

Homefront‘s campaign was highly criticized for being only 5 hours long. Ultimately, its up to the gamer to decide if Homefront‘s unique story about the occupation of America by a unified Korea is worth their money. Kaos’s claim that the multiplayer helps make Homefront a solid choice may not be unfounded, as it has somehow escaped the same intense scrutiny the single player campaign has suffered, instead garnishing some compliments.

Do you agree that Kaos has provided a compelling product, or is Homefront just another splash in a massive ocean of first person shooters?

Homefront‘s battle for America started in North America earlier this week on the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and OnLive with a European release today bringing more gamers into the resistance. Our review of Homefront should help you decide if this is going to be your fight.

  1. The multiplayer is super laggy if you can even get into a match – its been out for 4 days now guys, fix your servers patch the game do something. If you haven’t bought this game I suggest waiting for a multiplayer patch before dishing out $60 for it like me.

    • i played from day 1 with no lag at all.. no problem getting into any server..but im playing on pc

  2. The game for me and at least mimimal of 6 friends , has been extremely fun , the servers have had minimal lag on one out of 5 games , the party joining is difficult , yet hit detection unlike cod seems on point , the perks or abilities as they call it is awesome , I’m purely a multiplayer person , as are all my friends , so the dedicated servers an thq quick response to catching cheaters and fixing glitches is well enough in my opinion for people to buy this game , if your tired of cheaters and lousy hit detection and finding matchups , then try this game , servers may have problems but in the future I’m confident it will be sorted out .

  3. I purchased homefront and personally i find it very good. I have to agree with 4th_horseman that the online is great since Ive had it Ive seen no lag online ever! SO hence people if you are playing homefront on dedicated serves and you are lagging first think check your connection speed dont assume just because your lagging its the games or servers fault!

  4. I bought homefront and I believe the game is not worth the 60 dollars. For the simple fact that yes I have a killer connection never a problem with it.If a game comes out and the company that backs the game saying its great and had a great marketing plan behing it…people are going to but it pure and simple and we all no it.So for the matches that I have played yes it is fun if you can get into a match with at least 2 or more of yourfriends.Homefront is a strong team game for sure.

    • That didn’t make any sense.

      • it did actually, you must just either be 10 or under or have the brain of a 10 year old or younger. he just missed a few words out that you can make up to understand it completely

  5. Look I like the game needs longer story too it and u need way more weapons and perks and vehicles like what where u thinking sucks u can’t put attachments on your smokers and there’s only two like really? And the hit markets with snipers and some guns fix it and give us more stuff guns add on to. Story don’t be like call of duty don’t just make maps set yourself apart and I’m sure u be just as big as call of duty but if I had to rate this I give homefront ten out of ten better then blackops and I’m a call of duty fan too make some more camos too and gadgets but ya latter

    • call of duty is old, even black ops, its like 7 years old just with new graphics that aren’t very good.
they’re just dirty money makers if so many people didnt love it for some reason and buy it they would have made a new engine for it and i think it would be good. but they didnt need to they spent hardly any making it the last 6 years just used the same game over and over tweaking a little n slapping on same but upgraded graphics. COD’s poo. and judging by what you jus said so is homefront

  6. Learn to spell. Homefront might be short but honestly I think they worked it perfectly. Shorter campaign to get you familiar with the story and controls, but not so long you get burned out. Multiplayer is long enough that you play till you unlock the good stuff and then dlc will be out in no time. Awesome story and multiplayer idk what all the garbage is about it not being good.

    • who cares unless your dumb you can still understand what hes saying

  7. this game at the moment is crap. short and sweet

  8. this game is shite lol THQ need to stick to making crappy wrestling and UFC games. although this games probly better than COD which just shows how sh*t their game is, how old and outdated their enigne is. all the years their fans have blindly not noticed how crap their games is because nothing to compare it to. now they no COD IS SHITE. it could be good but ITS a SITE game.

  9. Single player was way too short. At the time the multiplayer was getting really fun and cool, it suddenly ended. Story was very cool, but again, way too short. It feels like half the campaign was cut out of the final version to make the game smaller in size.

    Not worth the 60$ really.

  10. I bought this game to replace the clunky controls in Battlefield BC2 and boy did I waste $60. I run a quad core pc with sli video and fiber internet and I lag in the servers. Well I guess it is back to COD4. Seems no one will ever make a game like that again

  11. Anyone who says anything positive about this game is probably from THQs marketing department. The multiplayers ONLY strong point is the map design, but that’s only if you can actually get into a match. There are 12 weapons in the entire game, counting the ONE secondary, a poorly designed M9. The single player is way too short, as has been stated it is not long enough to burn you out, however it is not long enough to entertain you, either. Along with English speaking Koreans who are equipped with American weapons, the game is lacking the “compelling story” it was claimed to include. What happened to all of the privately owned firearms? America is the most gun loving country on the planet. You’d think there would be more than 9 rebels in all of california. Even still, after the Korean EMP attack, the power grid still works as do US Military vehicles and other assorted electronic equipment. Basically this game is dissapointment followed by plothole followed by lack of creativity followed by half-assmanship. If you are going to make a game about America being invaded and occupied, try picking a country that isn’t third world. And to release the other half of the game as DLC is a terrible joke, my bet is the DLC will be REALLY quick to download, meaning ITS ALREADY ON THE DISC. THQ: please never make a game again and tell Walmart to give me all of my money back on my return because you’re claim “the price drop is just retailers trying to capitalize on the release of a new game” is horse s*** and I want my money back. And WTF is up with this battle code crap? Buying your crappy game isn’t good enough to access all of multiplayer? Hopefully other game companies take note of your 125,000 copy shortfall of your HILARIOUS 2 million copies sold goal, and realize selling a WHOLE game for 60 is the way to go. In short, THQ can lick the smelliest part of my gouch and if reperations are not made for my wasted 60 your design studio may be at risk of an arson attack. With love, the THQ boycott.

    • Agree with you about the positive marketing comments above us. I returned this game(360 version) to GameStop at least I got $30 towards another game. I give Kaos credit that they had good ideas in their perk system and their game play ideas, also map design was pretty good. But basically it came down to this for me in a multiplayer match: Enemy behind large boulder, he sticks his head up to look, I shoot head but bullet gets stopped by invisible rock outline. Enemy pops up a little further, I see his shoulders now – I put crosshair on head, fail bullet hitting rock animation shown. Can’t shoot through car windows at enemy behind car, extremely difficult to shoot through railings on stairs and walkways. Its just not good enough to be an alternate FPS game and certainly not good enough to top CoD. Graphically there is a limit to what can be achieved and I let Kaos off the hook because the more players you have it always seems like there must be a trade off in graphics, I am of course talking consoles here. Any way rent if you find the single player game (5hrs long) idea interesting but note if you rent for multiplayer you will have to buy a HomeFront BattleCode for approx 200-240 microsoft space bucks.

  12. this is a game with alot of potential every body that puts it down is just comparing it to cod and bfbc but there really all the same first person shooter what this game does need like all the rest already have is friendly fire mode it make the game experience much better overall along with a few patches also more cutom create match options it was either there way or the highway not much there in all i thuoght the multiplayer game play is really good lots of cover positions to duck away from snipers and to spot shoot from hope theres plenty of dlc maps and a few more weapons it is 2027 by the way so if theres an invasion as such as this then dont you think they would bring alot more to the table wheres all of the north korean hardware they manufacture their own aks a sequel to this will be much improved and tuned game i think

  13. HomeFront – Agreed, with most and if you played it you will agree, story mode, way to short! I’m a trophy wh**re and love spending the time to accomplish the “PLATINUM” bling, but this didn’t even take much time. I bought mine used, not realizing I needed to purchase an online pass to continue past level 5 (gay idea), just another way to get $10 out of people that don’t want to pay $60 for a video game they are really not sure about. I’m enjoying the multiplayer and the maps, and will likely get the DLC’s in the future!!
