Heavy Rain Developer Kara

The Game Developers Conference is well underway in San Francisco, California today, and as should be expected from an event of its scale, plenty of game-related news has been announced. In what may very well be the gamer-focused highlight of the entire show thus far, Quantic Dream released a short film following a character called Kara.

Fans anxiously awaiting the next game from the Heavy Rain developer will have to wait a bit longer though, since Kara is just a tech demo created to test out a new method of capturing an actor's performance within a video game.

The trailer certainly does a great job of showing how wonderfully an actor's performance can be transferred into a game. The short teaser will almost definitely evoke emotions that people may never have thought they had, and providing an absolutely stunning example of where games will be heading in the future.

Quantic Dream director David Cage was on-hand during Kara's big debut during GDC, informing those in attendance why his team decided to use Kara as a tech demo instead of pursuing the concept as an entirely new project. Apparently the studio likes to test the waters with a few concepts before committing their time to a big-budget project, which is understandable.

Unfortunately, Cage maintains that their plans won't be changing, regardless of how badly we want to see what happens to the female protagonist next:

"“Kara” is not our next game. It’s not the character, it’s not the world, it’s not the story. …We do things in a very strange way here, things that have nothing to do with the games we make. But I think that’s a part of the DNA of the studio, and hopefully something that people like about us — they never know what they’re going to get!"

Whatever Quantic Dream has up its collective sleeves will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. Chances are their next project will be held off for a debut on the much talked about PlayStation 4 — which means the game's graphics may end up looking like those found in Kojima's new Fox Engine.

Stay tuned to Game Rant for more information on Kara and Quantic Dream's next big game as soon as it becomes available.
