Halo-4-Master-Chief1

Master Chief's helmet is one of the most iconic images in contemporary video game culture for a number of reasons (see our list of the top 10 coolest video game armors). The Spartan headgear and visor have kept the hero of the Halo franchise safe through four alien-slaying games, but it has also kept his face a secret from gamers for the last 13 years.

Ever since Samus unmasked for the first time in the original Metroid, the reveal of video game heroes' faces has always been an exciting moment for dedicated fans. Unfortunately for loyal Halo fans, that reveal has still yet to arrive over a decade after the first game's release. At this point, many players are unsure that developers will ever remove the Spartan's mask on camera.

After all these years of waiting patiently, some fans have finally taken it upon themselves to piece together the Chief's mug. For only having a few reference points to work with, the artists seems to have done a pretty great job. He isn't the most handsome fella, but we suppose a lifetime of war would wear anybody down...

Spoiler alert for players who haven't finished Halo 4 yet, the face (designed by RexAdde) was made by building off of the eyes that are revealed when Chief's helmet is removed during the Legendary ending of the most recent Halo game. The artist used the eyes in combination with different hints and reveals that have been scattered throughout the series. The creator suggests that this is how Chief should look at age 41, in the year 2552.

Die-hard Halo fans seem to be pretty convinced that RexAdde's interpretation is spot-on, but we won't know for sure unless Chief is actually unmasked in one of the upcoming games. Rumors suggest that the next Halo adventure will be an HD remake of Halo 2 and it seems pretty unlikely that an unmasking would be added into that anniversary edition. The next possibility to see Chief's face will likely come with the release of Halo 5 in 2015.

At this point, we're not so sure a reveal of Chief's face could ever live up to what fans have imagined while playing the rest of the games during the last decade. If Star Wars prequels have taught us anything, it's that some things are better left to the imagination.

Would you like to see Master Chief officially unmasked in Xbox One's Halo 5 or do you prefer the mystery? Let us know in the comments.
