Halo Infinite's multiplayer arena features several new modes, including Strongholds. Seasoned vets will remember the old territories ranked mode from Halo 2 and 3. The basics of this Halo Infinite mode are simple, and the tactics for victory are even easier to understand. That being said, there are a few more advanced tactics that can be employed in ranked modes to control all of the strongholds and secure a victory even faster.

In standard 4v4, there are a total of three strongholds, which are essentially the classic Halo territories or king of the hill points. Teams will need to secure these points to score and eventually win the match.

Capture Two Out Of Three Points

The main objective in the new Strongholds mode is to hold at least two of the three points. If a team has two of the three, they will begin scoring points. If all three points are captured by one side, the scoring timer will add double the points to that team each second.

Kills are irrelevant in Strongholds mode, so focusing on the points is essential. Obviously, players should try to take out enemies, but only when they are defending or capturing an objective.

Sprint To The Next Point

Speed and efficiency are key when trying to win a game of Strongholds. Typically, the squad with the most captures will win the match. This means that getting from a captured point to the next and securing the second point should be the team's number one priority.

Equipment like the dash and grapple hook can make crossing the maps even easier. Players that use their resources and stay focused on getting to point A, B, or C will win the vast majority of matches in this mode.

Contest Or Rotate

Players have the option of contesting a point being captured or rotating to the next objective. The correct choice will depend on how many enemies are on the point and how many objectives a team has:

  • If the opponents are capturing their first point, rotating is the best option.
  • If the score is 1 to 1, fighting for the point can secure scoring.

Gamers need to be aware of their teammates' movement and presence as well. With help, fighting a contested point makes sense. However, fighting a 1v3 on a contested point rarely goes well. Another important consideration is what point is available for capture. If there are two points available and one is exposed in the middle of the map, opt for the other.

Communicate Movement

If the other team is moving to C, players need to indicate that to their teammates. If enough Spartans are up, they can contest point C. The other option is to move to B or A because the enemy team will be out of position to contest. Don't worry about going positive in this mode. Strategic kills and communication are more valuable than going 2.0.

Spartans should also indicate which point they are moving to, that way their teammates can choose to support or disperse. One Spartan can capture a point quickly enough, so it is a good idea for one teammate to cover during the capture.

Grab Power Weapons And Grenades

On several of the maps, power weapons and armor will be the difference in the game. These weapons have the ability to kill Spartans in one shot and can swing the game in just a few seconds. Likewise, active camo and overshields can make a huge difference in the game. Listen for the alerts that these items and weapons will be in play to get the jump on opposing teams. People should be grabbing as many grenades as they can when moving around the map.

Enemy Spartans will be exposed and can be grenaded off the capture points. Try to save at least one grenade to capture or defend a Stronghold.

Utilize Equipment

This applies to every mode. Dropwalls, dashes, and the grapple will give teams a slight advantage when in vulnerable situations. These items are found on the ground on every map. New players should try each one of them out and figure out how to optimize their use in this mode specifically. Many of the points are in protected areas that can be infiltrated with the use of equipment.

Dropwalls provide cover while capturing, and grapples give players the ability to flank in hard-to-reach areas. Combining the use of these special items with the classic radar will spell trouble for enemy Spartans.

Halo Infinite releases on December 8 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. Halo Infinite's multiplayer beta is currently available on these platforms and is free-to-play.
