The release date for Halo Infinite is less than 2 months away. Launching on December 8, the game is part of an already packed end of the year for the gaming industry. While fans have had a chance over the last couple of months to see and play the multiplayer in Halo Infinite, many gamers, including professional Halo players, were eager to learn more about Competitive mode. After months of waiting, 343 Industries is finally answering some of these questions.

In a new Halo Waypoint blog post, details regarding Competitive mode were unveiled for Halo Infinite. The developers noted that Competitive matches will feature the classic 3-burst Battle Rifle as the starting weapon. In addition, Competitive play, unlike causal games, will remove motion tracker, grenade hit markers, and secondary starting weapons while turning on friendly fire. Furthermore, they emphasized the skill of the player along with the decision-making of the team, noting that “we want to make sure the team that wins is the team that should win.”

Among the new details revealed by the developers was news about the game types coming to Competitive play. According to 343, the Competitive playlist for Halo Infinite will consist of Slayer, Capture the Flag, Strongholds, and Oddball. In addition to these game types, the developers noted that the weapon pickups on the map have been adjusted to make them feel useful but not overpowered. Even though power weapons can turn the tide of a battle, 343 Industries wanted proper positioning and team strategy to be able to counter these sandbox items.

In addition to a deep dive into the Competitive mode in the Halo Waypoint blog post, 343 also gave players a first look at gameplay from a Competitive match. Taking place on Recharge, a 4v4 map seen in the multiplayer preview, the match used Competitive settings and featured the Strongholds game type.

This news comes after Halo Infinite recently held multiplayer previews. While the first preview was a closed test flight for only some Halo Insider members, the second preview allowed all Xbox Insiders to jump into the action. In addition, the second weekend featured a look at 343’s revamped Big Team Battle mode. With 24 players in a lobby compared to the 16 players in previous games, this updated game mode was well received by many members of the Halo community.

With only a few weeks remaining before players get to check out the game for themselves, it will be interesting to see what other details the developers unveil before release. Perhaps, gamers will finally get another look at the Halo Infinite campaign that takes place on Zeta Halo and centers on Master Chief.

Halo Infinite releases December 8 on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
