Halo 4 Foreunners

The release date for Halo 4 is quickly approaching. The game has officially gone gold, and work at 343 Industries has likely shifted towards patches and downloadable content. While Xbox 360 owners eagerly count down the days until Master Chief makes his much anticipated return, excitement for the title is beginning to hit a fever pitch. Gamers already have a good idea of what to expect from the game, though there are still some details that fans are dying to learn — more specifically story details.

Even though 343 isn't willing to give away too many campaign details, Halo franchise development director Frank O'Connor has reassured die-hard fans that there will be plenty of pre-existing lore to be found within the confines of the Halo 4 disc. During an interview with VG247, O'Connor confirmed that the terminals (hidden computers that give players a better insight into the events surrounding the game) will return in the latest Halo installment. Not only will they be returning, but they'll also allegedly "blow your mind."

"There’s a bunch of ways that we tell the story, and it’s very complete if you haven’t read any of the books or played any of the previous games. Everything you need to know about the characters, backstory and Forerunner civilization is built into the game.”

"I won’t ruin it for you but we also have terminals that go into the very surprising history of the Forerunner relationship with humans, and there’s some stuff that happens in the terminals that will — certainly for the hardcore fans — blow their minds.”

"We tried to make the story more approachable and less baroque and obscure, so it’s all going to be right in your face, and hopefully people will enjoy that. But yeah, it’s all part of the story."

There's a lot that's happened in the Halo universe, and it seems that long-time fans will enjoy a few in-game events that nod to the series' past. It should be interesting to see if the Forerunners had a greater relationship with humans at one point then the story thus far has lead many to believe, but for now all fans can do is speculate. At the very least, fans can find comfort in the fact that the Flood won't be returning in the campaign — instead the pesky faction will play a role in Halo 4's multiplayer — which is a huge relief for many.

Whatever adventure awaits Master Chief and Cortana won't be shrouded in mystery much longer, as Halo 4 is scheduled to invade Xbox 360 on November 6th.
