One of 2020's biggest surprises was Supergiant Games' roguelike Hades. The game quickly became one of the biggest critical successes of the year when it released, and since then there has been a huge showing for the indie darling. Fans eager for more Hades content can soon look forward to a fan-produced recording of the Iliad, one of the Greek poems that influenced the game.

Hades is a roguelike dungeon crawler developed by Supergiant Games. The game started as an Epic Games Store exclusive Early Access project in December 2018, where it received frequent updates in response to fan feedback before officially launching in September 2020 for Nintendo Switch and PC. Since then, the game has gone on to become a major critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards for its achievements in game design including Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards.

The game has quickly grown a passionate fan following, which has inspired projects such as "The Hades Community Iliad Project," started by Hades speedrunner Wriste13. The project is a Hades-themed audiobook featuring many familiar faces in the Hades community such as YouTuber and streamer Jawless Paul, as well as Courtney Vineys, the voice actress for Dusa and Aphrodite from the game itself. The audiobook is set to air via Twitch on June 20.

Supergiant Games has been quick to share its support for the project, with Hades creative director Greg Kasavin even providing a forward for the audiobook. Supergiant shared Wriste13's Tweet announcing the stream saying, "It's wonderful when Hades can help spark new or renewed interest in Greek myth! These folks from our community will soon be taking it to the next level with a complete audio recording of the Iliad of Homer."

The Iliad is one of the foundational pieces of Greek literary, and is believed to have been written as early as 8BC. The version of the poem that The Hades Community Iliad Project will be reading from is the Robert Fagles adaptation. The poem is set during the Trojan War and follows Achilles, a character depicted in Hades, as he battles with King Agamemnon (who some may recognize from his depiction in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey).

This is a unique opportunity for Hades fans to educate themselves on the Greek mythology that inspired the characters and events of the game, which Supergiant has been praised for representing faithfully. It may also provide insight into the game's depiction of Achilles and Patroclus, and show why the characters start their respective arcs separated when Zagreus first meets them in the game.

Hades is available now for Nintendo Switch and PC.
