Fans of fantasy, horror, and all-around masterful storytelling finally have a glimpse at the game marking visionary director Guillermo Del Toro‘s entry into the genre of videogame design. The project was revealed at tonight’s Spike VGAs, and although the teaser trailer reveals little more than an overall mood of “the new terror from Guillermo Del Toro” titled inSane, it does give a sense of the direction the production will take.
Since Del Toro was confirmed to be producing a major series of games with publisher THQ, there has been little to no information given regarding any of the game’s specifics, aside from being described as “Lovecraftian.” Del Toro has revealed in past interviews that the game would be a new take on the survival horror genre, and there is no mistaking the eerily horrific look and feel of inSane‘s first teaser.
To use the words of the man himself, take a look at the “craziness”:
The trailer may disappoint those hoping for a more extensive look at the mysterious project, but the release date of 2013 is an indication of just how early in the development stage the game currently sits.
Del Toro has also placed emphasis on the fact that he and Volition will not be small-scale games- even if that’s where THQ sees the future of their business– but massive games on a large scale. An estimate was given of a three year production cycle, but it’s evident to anyone who tuned in to the show that we’ll have plenty to keep us busy in the meantime.
inSane is yet another example of how THQ is changing their way of doing business, coming to an arrangement with an A-list Hollywood director for total artistic control, as well as gathering new talent from their competition. Where the publisher goes in the future is clearly anyone’s guess, but at this point the future is bright.
Now we must wait until the next bit of information is released concerning Del Toro’s newest terror, but our hopes are high given his passionate and sincere defense of videogames as art. With plenty of blockbuster titles bringing down the house at this year’s awards, it’s nice to see that the idea of games as an expression of creativity is still alive and well.
Guillermo Del Toro’s inSane is currently scheduled for a 2013 release.
