The Game Awards 2021 was full of big moments, with plenty of exciting new trailers and game reveals to get fans hyped. One moment that really got fans talking was when acclaimed film director Guillermo del Toro appeared to declare the winner of the Best Art Direction award. Not only did Guillermo del Toro reveal that Deathloop won Best Art Direction, but he also seemingly teased something about Silent Hill.

At The Game Awards 2021, Guillermo del Toro said, "You know, one franchise I love the art direction in: Silent Hill. I hope we get a new one of those." This is significant because del Toro was previously working on Silent Hills in collaboration with Hideo Kojima and Konami. Unfortunately, Konami canceled Silent Hills before it could really get off the ground, and del Toro has been vocal about his disappointment since then.

There have been conflicting rumors that Hideo Kojima is working on a Silent Hill game, though nothing has been confirmed at the time of this writing. Some have made the claim that Kojima is helping make a Silent Hill PS5 exclusive, whereas others claim that Kojima is making an original horror game as an Xbox exclusive. Whatever the case may be, del Toro's comments understandably got Silent Hill fans buzzing, as many took it as a tease that the Silent Hill rumors are true and he may even be involved.

Unfortunately for Silent Hill fans, del Toro has dashed their hopes. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, del Toro clarified that he is not involved in any kind of Silent Hill project. He explained that he "wanted to tickle the ribs of Konami" because he still doesn't understand why Silent Hills was canceled. "What we were going to do was so enthralling," del Toro said. So, essentially, del Toro's comment about Silent Hill at The Game Awards was merely a way to troll Konami and was not a genuine tease.

The vision that del Toro and Kojima had for Silent Hills was never realized, but the two have collaborated since then. As some may recall, a character in Kojima's Death Stranding uses del Toro's likeness, though the Pacific Rim and Shape of Water director did not actually provide the voice work for the character.

Fans of Guillermo del Toro can head to theaters to check out his latest film, the well-received Nightmare Alley, though they shouldn't expect to see him involved with video games again anytime soon, if ever.
