Today is the day for the trailers of games tied in to summer blockbuster movies. We’ve already seen the clip for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and now the good people at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have come forth with the first trailer for Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.
Though the clip is entirely gameplay-free, it does answer at least one question potential players may have had about the game: Ryan Reynolds appears to be lending his likeness and voice to the project. No doubt that will help to create a nice bit of continuity between the game and the Green Lantern film, which are otherwise not directly related.
Scant new information has been revealed alongside the rendered trailer for Rise of the Manhunters, which is being billed as “inspired by the feature film.” The quote offered by Warner Bros. at the time of the game’s announcement — “…players will utilize over a dozen constructs and take flight across the deepest parts of the Universe to restore intergalactic order by wielding the ultimate weapon: the Green Lantern power ring” — remains the sole description of the game so far. Though the trailer ends with a URL, www.greenlanternvideogame.com, entering it merely redirects to the game’s Facebook page.
Take a look at the first trailer for Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters.
Double Helix Games, most recently responsible for Front Mission Evolved, has apparently been at work on Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters since 2009. That we have yet to see a single screenshot from the game proper is frankly a bit alarming. With the movie due in just four months, and the game expected to launch more or less simultaneously, it seems that the developers might have a little more to share.
The stakes have been dramatically raised for superhero games, and no one should be more aware of that than Warner Bros., parent company of DC. After the masterful Batman: Arkham Asylum, Warner Bros. purchased Rocksteady Studios so that the highly anticipated follow-up Batman: Arkham City could be brought in house. Just as the Green Lantern feature film will ultimately be judged against the pillar of the genre, arugably Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, so too will Rise of the Manhunters be judged against Rocksteady’s Batman games. Here’s hoping Green Lantern can measure up, on both counts.
Ranters, what do you think of the Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters trailer? How do you think the game will compare with Batman: Arkham City?
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is currently in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and DS. It is expected to launch near the release of the Green Lantern feature film.
