Big new out of Warner Bros. today: a Green Lantern game is on the way to coincide with next year’s Green Lantern feature film. Titled Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, the game is being developed by Double Helix Games for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Griptonite Games will be handling the DS version.
Very little concrete information has been released, and we don’t yet know if Ryan Reynolds will be voicing Hal Jordan in the game. We do know that the game is “inspired by the feature film.” From the press release:
“In the videogame players will utilize over a dozen constructs and take flight across the deepest parts of the Universe to restore intergalactic order by wielding the ultimate weapon: the Green Lantern power ring.”
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Samantha Ryan expounds just a little further:
“Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters gives players the chance to experience the world of the Green Lantern mythology in an interactive way, going beyond the events of the film and comic books.”
“The game is the first to center around DC Comics’ Green Lantern franchise and we’re excited to give fans the opportunity to experience the power of the ring with engaging gameplay.”
As fans of the comic are no doubt aware, Green Lantern’s ring is enormously powerful. Indeed, as a videogame device, I’m curious how the developers will limit its use. No doubt, maintaining the ring’s charge will be an important mechanic. Somehow, I suspect there may be a lot of yellow enemies in the game, as well.
Ah, but the possibilities: ring based combat, physics puzzles, flight, maybe even multiplayer with other members of the Green Lantern Corps. If anything, there are almost too many options available to the developers.
When I think of the best superhero game yet produced — and, of course, I’m referring to Batman: Arkham Asylum — I think of a highly focused experience. Here’s hoping the developers at Double Helix Games are up to the task of funneling all of Green Lantern’s abilities into a cohesive game.
A trip to Double Helix’s website reveals that they’ve been “working on an exciting unannounced Warner Bros. Interactive title” since September of 2009. Clearly they are referring to Rise of the Manhunters. Given that the game should have nearly another year of development ahead of it, Double Helix just might have enough time to deliver a game worthy of the license. On the other hand, Double Helix is most recently responsible for the poorly received G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.
Time to put all my cards on the table: Green Lantern was far and away my favorite comic when I was a kid. I’m trying to regard the movie with cautious optimism. For now, I’ll be thinking of the game the same way. But you can bet I’m looking forward to new details on both.
Ranters, what are your thoughts on Rise of the Manhunters — is the Green Lantern a good character for a game? Is Double Helix the right developer for the property?
Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters hits the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and DS next summer, alongside the Green Lantern feature film.
