Fall is the perfect season for horror movies since, thanks to the classic film Halloween, fans love the moody feeling that these stories evoke. But there are also some great films that are set from the months of June to August. From Friday The 13th's camp setting to I Know What You Did Last Summer, characters work at a camp by a pretty lake or have trouble moving on from a tragedy that happened the summer after high school.

While there are plenty of horror movies that are set during the summer months, there are also some scary films that have a summertime feeling of spending time outside, having fun, and thinking that anything could happen. Of course, in these movies, what does end up happening is terrifying and dangerous.

Scream (1996)

While Scream is set during the academic year, since Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends learn about the tragic murder of Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) while getting ready for their morning classes, there's something about the 1996 film that evokes a summertime vibe.

Scream fans love the Woodsboro setting, and the fact that the movie is set in a small California town makes it great viewing in the summertime. School also gets canceled halfway through the story, which makes the students excited at the chance to have some fun instead of sitting in class all day. Of course, the reason for school being out is terrible as people are being killed.

A Perfect Getaway (2009)

Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn and Timothy Olyphant in The Perfect Getaway

Besides being a great thriller with a smart plot twist, A Perfect Getaway is another good movie to watch during the summer. Cydney (Milla Jovovich) and Cliff Anderson (Steve Zahn) are enjoying their honeymoon when they come across two couples: Kale Garrity (Chris Hemsworth), Cleo (Marley Shelton), Gina Stone (Kiele Sanchez), and Nick Bennett (Timothy Olyphant). There's a killer on the loose and Cyndey and Cliff aren't sure what will happen next.

The Hawaii setting makes this a fun and enjoyable film when the weather is warm and audiences want to do nothing but lie by a pool or sit on a beach and read a good book. The movie will feel like a mental vacation and the plot will be fun to figure out as well. It's a great film to watch on a summer evening (maybe with a cold fruity drink in hand).

Dark Skies (2013)

The 2013 movie Dark Skies is a brilliant alien thriller that aged well, and it's also a horror movie that seems perfect to watch during the months of June, July, and August.

Lacy (Keri Russell) and Daniel Barrett (Josh Hamilton) are struggling financially, which puts their marriage on thin ice, but that's the least of their issues when their son Sammy (Kadan Rockett) seems to be contacted by aliens named The Greys. Summer movies have traditionally been fun blockbusters that beg for cold soda and salty, buttery popcorn, and Dark Skies definitely fits into that category. The action-packed story of a family being targeted by strange beings will be a lot of fun to watch one night.

Summer Of '84 (2018)

Nikki (Tiera Skovbye) and Davey (Graham Verchere) in Summer Of '84

Summer Of '84 is a critically acclaimed film that takes place during one summer. A group of teenage friends start wondering if there's something seriously wrong in their town of Cape May, Oregon. They know that 13 adolescent boys who have gone missing over 10 years. Davey Armstrong (Graham Verchere), Tommy "Eats" Eaton (Judah Lewis), Curtis Farraday (Cory Gruter-Andrew), and Dale "Woody" Woodsworth (Caleb Emergy) think that Wayne Mackey (Rich Sommer), a cop who lives near them, could actually be a murderer.

Summer Of '84 is an underrated teen horror movie about friendship and self-discovery and following gut instincts. But while it's a smart film with some big themes, it also has a fun summer vibe as the main characters are trying to have an enjoyable summer. But their peaceful hang-outs become scary as they get deeper into the mystery of Mackey.

Fantasy Island (2020)

While Fantasy Island is a Blumhouse horror movie that fell flat, it does work as a summer movie, as long as audiences ignore the confusing plot points and lack of character development. It's not the scariest film ever or the most interesting, but it does have a very cool atmosphere, which makes it work in the summer.

The setting works well when the weather heats up outside, as the characters arrive in this beautiful location and wonder if their dreams really can come true here. If audiences ignore the scary events happening, the resort on the island does feel like the perfect, idyllic vacation spot, and it's easy to want to stay here (minus the fact that the main characters start fighting for their lives, of course).
