Grand Theft Auto Online Capture Update

As promised, Rockstar Games is ready to release their new Capture mode for Grand Theft Auto Online. The mode will be added to the game via free update, which will also include some minor changes to the multiplayer experience.

Capture, for those that don't know, is Grand Theft Auto Online's riff on the traditional Capture the Flag mode, and it comes in four different flavors. Each provide a different dynamic to the "grab this item and do something with it" objective, but they aren't particular original sub-modes either.

Raid, for example, is the basic variant in Capture, and asks a team of players to snatch a package from an opponent's base and return it to their own base. The team that hits a score threshold, or capture's the most packages, wins.

Here are the brief descriptions for all four Capture sub-modes:

RAID - In Raid, you'll have to fight your way into your opponents’ base and steal a package, then deliver it back to your base to score points. Reach the target score, or deliver more packages than your opponents do in the allotted time to win the match.

HOLD - When playing Hold, teams must collect and store as many packages as possible in their base. Packages can either be found on the map, or stolen from the opposing team’s bases. Reach the target score, or hold the most packages when the time runs out, to win.

GTA - As the ubiquitous acronym might suggest, GTA mode tasks players with stealing target vehicles located all around the map, before bringing them back to their respective bases. Each team must fight to steal more vehicles in the allotted time than their opponents.

CONTEND - In Contend, there's only one package, situated in the middle of the map. Teams must fight to bring this package back to their respective bases, and once the package is captured it respawns in the middle of the map and is up for grabs again.

All told, Rockstar is delivering 20 new jobs across the four different sub-modes — plenty of content for GTA Online players to enjoy. Granted, it's content that has been done before in almost every other multiplayer game, but that doesn't mean GTA's particular brand of mayhem can't make Capture stand out.

As far as the update's various fixes, Rockstar says they will release a full rundown sometime later today, presumably after the file goes live.

After a very rocky start for Grand Theft Auto Online, it appears Rockstar has things back on track, and they are sticking to their release schedule. They just launched the first section of their content creation tools, the deathmatch and race creation beta, a few days ago, giving gamers their first opportunity to play within that sandbox.

And while content creation tools rank high on Rockstar's to-do list, they also have several other exciting pieces of content in the pipeline. At some point, they hope to have online heists for multiplayer gamers to enjoy, and they have also begun work on single player DLC for Grand Theft Auto 5.

What other multiplayer modes would you like to see Rockstar add? If you had a chance to try it out, what do you think of the new Capture mode?
