Rockstar Interested in PS4 & Xbox One; No ‘GTA 5′ on Next-Gen Consoles

One of the biggest entertainment launches in history is underway, as Grand Theft Auto 5 released to rave reviews, excited franchise fans, and a few frequently asked questions. The latest GTA installment is poised to break series sale records and is well on its way to becoming one of the biggest titles of 2013 – even before the multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online, goes live at the beginning of October.

However, despite solid pre-order sales (and monumental day one purchases), a few reluctant fans are still holding-out – as they await confirmation (or denial) of possible ports to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It’s understandable enough, prior reports indicated that the title could be coming to PC as well as PS4 and Xbox One – so it’s understandable that some gamers would hold out to experience the world of Los Santos powered by next-generation hardware. Still, while some evidence points to the possibility of the game eventually arriving on next-generation consoles, Rockstar Games maintains that there are currently no plans in place to support the game on PS4 (or Xbox One).

Speaking to The Guardian, Grand Theft Auto 5 co-writer and Rockstar Games VP of creativity, Dan Houser, asserted that the team is obviously interested in developing titles for the next-generation consoles but that Grand Theft Auto 5 will not be appearing on PS4 (or likely Xbox One):

“Of course we’re interested. But no, not in terms of GTA, because we’re always working on the current game. We look at the tech at a more practical level: what will be ready for which game that we’re working on further down the line. We don’t have another GTA in development, we don’t work on three of these games at a time. That would be phenomenally depressing.

“So, in terms of GTA, no. We get pitched by the hardware manufacturers on what they’re planning to do and our tech guys come up with ideas on how that could be used. Does this influence design decisions? Of course. But we’re not sat there fantasizing about 10 years down the line. We’re so busy with what we’re doing right now.”

Houser raises a fair point and, given that Grand Theft Auto 5 is selling just fine on current-generation hardware, it makes sense that the team would make their own jump to PS4 and Xbox One by designing a title from the ground up – not simply porting a game that was made to run on PS3 and Xbox 360. After all, Rockstar has already stated that Grand Theft Auto 5 “feels” next-gen. References to the PC and Orbis (the early PS4 alias) have been found buried in GTA5 code, so it’s certainly possible that the developer will re-release the title on next-gen systems a year or two down the line. Still, it’s understandable if Rockstar does not want to make that information public when they’re focused on getting the existing version out the gate – but it’s equally likely that there are currently no fixed plans to bring the title to PS4 and Xbox One.

That said, for gamers who are still holding out hope, keep in mind that while backwards compatibility appears to be a thing of the past, publishers are making the jump into the next-gen slightly more user friendly with PS4 and Xbox One upgrade options (where players are charged a nominal fee for a next-gen digital copy of a title they purchased on a current-gen disc). There’s no guarantee that, if PS4 and Xbox One versions even exist, Rockstar Games would offer a similar deal but given the strong denials from the developer, it’s easy to imagine they’d need to offer established fans some form of discount – should they unveil a next-generation version of the same title in the not-too-distant future.

For now, PC players still have enough reason to expect that GTA5 could come to the non-console world but gamers who are waiting on PS4 and Xbox One ports should probably just take the plunge. Even if next-generation versions are in development, it’s clear that it will be some time before they arrive and, after all, is it really worth missing all the release excitement on the chance that Rockstar Games is spreading misinformation?

  1. I guess I could follow suit and say this is bulls*** (which it is) but I guess the bigger picture is that if you look at gta 4 it came out around the same time ps3 did so it went hand in hand for me. So if they dont port gta 5 to next gen and it took rockstar 7 years or so to launch gta 5 and ps4 is predicted to stay cutting edge for about 6 years, then that means if gta 6 appears then it’ll skip ps4 and we’ll never get a taste of gta on this new sick a** console.

  2. why the hell not? this is crazy man ps4 will sharper graphics gta v would be amazing on the ps4 sort it out man cant believe youd have no interest in that

  3. The game, which is currently available for the Xbox 360 and PS3, is yet to be released for the latest next-gen consoles as well.i think rockstar is not
    that much stupid..

  4. Wow,ofc rockstar can’t be that dumb eventually GTA V will be on PS4 and xbox one…

  5. Of course Rockstar is going to release the game for the new consoles. They’re just playing it off as if they aren’t so people buy the current game instead of waiting for the new release.

  6. They are developing new games but I buy that not, only want gta 5 for ps4 rockstar

  7. f gta5 doesn’t come out for ps4 or xbox one I AM NEVER BUYING A ROCKSTAR GAME EVER AGAIN!!!!!!

    • Reason they may not bring it out is due to the amount of servers, staff, and other cost to run a software from a new platform. So it would be smarter to work on GTA 6 for multiple platforms. It is likely 90% chance we will not see GTA5 on new platforms.

  8. i agree rockstar would be stupid to not release gta 5 for the new gen systems it would be the best game ever for the new systems and if they are worried it wont sell on them thats insaine how could u not even think about doing it that makes no since if rockstar doesnt make it for new gen systems they will lose so many customers and rockstar will go to crap so go ahead and work on ur new game and see how many people buy it cuz how mad they will be if u dont put one of the best games in history on the new systems

  9. guys just believe that GTA V will come out for the next gen. they have to make it or they will have a lot of haters

  10. come on bring it out its so good

  11. This has made me very mad

  12. They would make so much more money if they made it for PS4 and Xbox One. Thats if they are quick enough.

  13. My ps3 along with gta iv and gtav recently got stolen and I now have the ps4 and your telling me that I cant have my favorite game because yall are to d*** lazy to do the math…
Whats the point in gtav if your not gonna make it fo the new generation consoles.?
It was the best game to me and your telling me I cant have it??? After ive already paid for it yall still refuse to

  14. Hi I want to know when is the Xbox 1 for grand theft auto five is going to come out

  15. if you won’t make a gta v for xbox one or ps4 it will be bad for you it will bring you a lot of haters

  16. This is simply put STUPID! How hard could it be to simply convert it to the next gen? I’m quite certain a lot of people bought it on the ps3 or 360, then sold those systems in order to pay for the ridiculously over priced Next gen systems. Therefore they would have sold the gta5 since they couldn’t play it! WTF is the matter with you people? best selling game of the year, or of your company and you have millions of people who would buy a next gen copy today?

No, no I think I will take the next 2 years making a new game first?

    Are u kidding me!?

  17. Please make for Xbox 1 I’ll pay 100

  18. I understand 4 u 2 bring the same game to the new systems dont make sence but make a downloadable copy wear we can play on our new systems that we can play until the new 1 comes out 4 xbox 1 or ps4 that will be cool.!!!!!!!!!! if not i guess i have 2 hold on 2 my 360 n ps3

    • You just went full retard. Nobody goes full retard.

  19. This design is wicked! You definitely know how to keep a
reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job.
I really loved what you had to say, and
more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!

  20. It is simple really. There are already pre-order options in some countries for GTA V next gen. So Rockstar are LYING and therefore do NOT deserve your patronage. They simply do not want to lose sales on current gen versions.
But no doubt all you Sheep will ignore that and buy it anyway, letting them know they can get away with this sort of thing.
