While Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto series is well known for sprawling open worlds and fully realized characters, if there's one element that most gamers agree could use work it's the gunplay. It's an integral part of the GTA experience, but also one that could be much better.

To that point, a comparison video has been making the rounds that suggests the gunplay in Grand Theft Auto 5 — Rockstar's highly anticipated open world sequel — has a lot in common with another Rockstar game: Max Payne 3. While the comparison made in the video is very basic, and doesn't go into too much detail, it does suggest Rockstar is stepping things up for GTA 5.

At the same time, there isn't much Grand Theft Auto 5 gunplay on display in the latest trailer for one to adequately compare to Max Payne 3, let alone to pass judgment on. Fans expect the gameplay in Grand Theft Auto 5 to be improved all around, and from a surface level it appears to be.

All we can really glean from the video is that, at one point in the game, players will be able to take cover behind a cover and advance on an enemy in a similar fashion to Max Payne 3. That and the white dot for aiming seem to be the only similarities from a visual perspective.

However, if Grand Theft Auto 5 incorporated Max Payne 3's gunplay, that might give gamers reason to get excited. Max Payne 3 was one of our favorite games from last year, and the gunplay had a lot to do with it.

It should also be mentioned that the gunplay in Max Payne 3 is your standard third person shooter gameplay. What makes it unique is the trademark bullet-time mechanic, which we suspect will not be included in Grand Theft Auto 5.

However, Grand Theft Auto 5 is bringing something unique to the table — a character-switching mechanic that allows players to change their perspective on the fly. They can switch between any of the three main characters either to provide cover, or simply to complete a different phase of a mission.

Whether or not Grand Theft Auto 5's gunplay resembles Max Payne 3? Well, we will have to wait until September to find that out.

How would you like to see Rockstar improve the gunplay in Grand Theft Auto 5? Do you think Max Payne 3 is a good point of reference?

Grand Theft Auto 5 releases September 17, 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
