Gran Turismo 7 grows closer by the day, and Polyphony Digitial continues to release new information for fans awaiting the title. In a new behind-the-scenes trailer for Gran Turismo 7, the developers speak about the game's car customization along with new footage.

The PlayStation community has known about Gran Turismo 7 for a couple years now, it being officially revealed along side the PS5, but rumors about its development going back before it. Gran Turismo Sport, the series' last entry, took the series in a different direction, particularly in its career mode, but Polyphony Digital has promised Gran Turismo 7 will return to that classic franchise formula. With Gran Turismo 7 also comes a huge milestone for the racing franchise: its 25th anniversary, going back to the original Gran Turismo on the PS1 in 1996. Despite this being the numerical seventh entry, there have been many other releases these past 25 years.

A new trailer for Gran Turismo 7 shows off the game's ambitious car customization system. The "Tuners" trailer opens with a speaker, presumably a developer at Polyphony Digital, who states, "One of the great pleasures of owning a car is being able to customize and tune it. The tiniest adjustments can make a difference." As the trailer continues, multiple menus are presented, showing a litany of different vehicle aspects players can tinker around with, from wheel rims, spoilers, and bumpers. These are pretty typical customization options for a racing game, but according to Polypohony Digital, Gran Turismo 7 will have greatest amount of tuning parts in the series to date.

While Polyphony Digital doesn't necessarily break down it's customization system in this trailer, it does describe the process of modifying one's car, with the footage showing the game's potential gameplay loop. Customizing cars is meant to be an experience of trail and error, the speaker describes, with certain parts affecting how the car handles, performs, and corners. Players will be able to purchase new components with the game's credit system (Cr.), with components being tailored for certain vehicle classes, those being Sports, Club Sports, Semi-Racing, Racing, and Extreme. Some of this was teased in Gran Turismo 7's trailer at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, but it is more fleshed out here.

It was a bold yet smart decision by PlayStation to drop a new Gran Turismo 7 trailer the same day that Forza Horizon 5 launched. While the two titles are not within the same sub-genre—Gran Turismo being a simulation racer, and Forza Horizon being an arcade racer—undoubtedly there will be a ton of comparisons between the two when Gran Turismo 7 launches next year. This trailer will likely not leave a huge impression on those who happen to watch it, but it is important for PlayStation to keep the game present in the conversation, especially today.

Gran Turismo 7 launches on March 4, 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
