GR Picks: Weekly Roundup July 25, 2010

GR Picks Weekly

Hello again.  I see you’ve made it back for another GR Picks Weekly Roundup. As I mentioned last week, while we certainly spend a lot of time diligently writing about and reviewing video games, we also spend an exorbitant amount of our time staring, glass-eyed, at YouTube videos that are, in some way, vaguely related to video games.

By the end of the week, we’ve typically amassed quite a stockpile of videogame-related nonsense. It would be a shame to waste – so here’s a round-up of all the video game related content that we may have missed this week.

First up we have God of War Style PB&J.

At first I thought this would be a lame fan video but it actually turned out to be a well-done skit – with a expertly-realized real-world PB&J QTE (in the God of War style). Plus that chubby guy is funny.

Mortal Kombat 1 Fatalitites  On Paper does exactly what it says. The video seemingly compiles the best pre-school art project ever known. Essentially, we have the character-select screen and each character’s fatality, all from the original Mortal Kombat, lovingly recreated in construction paper – using stop-frame animation. The best of Ray Harryhausen this is not, but I love when videogame nerds flex their creative muscles.

I love a good pastiche. I hate a bad one, but when they are done right, I can’t help but love them. Sunday Night Starcraft is a fake movie trailer that follows the fall from grace, and subsequent resurrection, of a group of comrades whose brotherhood was forged in the combat theater of online Starcraft. This send-up has it all – but perhaps my favorite part is the guy screaming about the blister packaging.

I like closing-out these weekly posts with a a mellow number; a soothing treat, to send you off into the world more relaxed than you were when you came in. In that spirit, let me share with you this final video, named Red Dead Redemption: World in Motion.

Digitalfoundry at Eurogamer, assembled this time-lapse video of the world of Red Dead Redemption from various angles. It’s a thing of true beauty, and serves to illustrate the level of craftsmanship Rockstar wields in its developers.

That’s it for this week, folks. Be sure to drop by again next week for more GR Picks!  As always, feel free to drop us a line with any videos, or other video game-related internet nonsense you may happen upon during your late-night surfings.

  1. The Red Dead one would make an epic screensaver, or the next looping “fireplace DVD” for your HDTV.
