Gotham Knights hasn't exactly wowed critics. On Metacritic, most reviews for the launch platforms are hovering around the 60s and 70s. This might be a disappointment to fans everywhere, especially since they have been waiting since 2015's Batman: Arkham Knight for a new Batman experience.

For some players, Gotham Knights may not live up to the high standards set by the Batman: Arkham games, but that doesn’t mean it's all bad. If the team worked to improve some of its flaws, those average scores could shoot right up. These ideas are just a few of the ways that the game could redeem itself.

7 Add Manual Saves

It’s wild that Gotham Knights launched with only autosaves enabled. This is a bad practice for action games for many reasons. One, if the one save file gets corrupted via glitches, players may have to start the whole thing over. That’s why it’s recommended to save to the cloud as well but even doing that can only help so much.

Giving players the ability to save manually is good for backup purposes. It’s also nice to allow them to save at some of their favorite parts in an experience. Three manual slots are the standard, but it would be even better if Gotham Knights put in more like ten or even twenty via a patch.

6 Add A Mini-Map

Sneaking up on enemies in Gotham Knights

There is a map system in Gotham Knights but it is not very well thought out. The city of Gotham is laid out in a 3D rendering which, admittedly, looks cool for an open-world city experience. The problem is navigating through the city streets is difficult without a more precise map. Most interior buildings don’t have a map at all which is also very frustrating.

It would be great if the city map could be switched between a 2D and a 3D style. It would be even better if players could add a mini-map to their HUD for both city and building navigation as it would make getting around Gotham much easier.

5 Add Better Tracking

The lack of a mini-map is only one of the problems with navigation. The developers could focus on giving players more information on the main map rather than changing how it looks artistically. For example, zones could be highlighted to show where gangs hang out instead of forcing players to scrub through old files to find their answers.

The waypoint system could also use some work on missions as sometimes it is unclear what players should do next. Between the HUD and the map, there needs to be a major overhaul in the next patch so that players can figure out what is going on.

4 Skip All Puzzles

Investigating a crime scene in Gotham Knights

There are certain puzzle sections in which players are forced to solve a crime scene by linking two pockets of data to each other. An early one sees the heroes trying to piece a code scratched on a piece of paper to a microwave. If these puzzles stump the player then they can choose to skip them after a few tries.

However, bigger, physical puzzles cannot be skipped like several in the labyrinth level later in the game. It would be nice if all puzzles could be skipped or if these crime scene puzzles could be skipped right away instead of after a few forced tries. Some action game fans are just not good at solving puzzles and need an extra hand wherever they can get it.

3 Customization Boosts

Equipping better gear will not only boost stats but will change the look of the heroes too. Every character has more than a dozen costume archetypes that they can then further customize. They can change the masks, for example, along with the color schemes.

These color variations take a long time to unlock along with the ability to change costumes completely from the standard set. It’s part of the RPG grind which is understandable but it would be nice if at least the color variants were either unlocked fully from the start or unlocked faster.

2 Pause Single-Player

Gotham Knights is set up similarly to a Soulslike game as far as the menu goes. Players can pause the game whenever they want to go into the options menus or activate photo mode. Going into the equipment menu is another story as that does not pause the action.

Players will get hit which makes sense when in a multiplayer game. It doesn’t make sense while playing alone though as pausing shouldn’t disrupt the flow of anyone else. The simple solution is to pause menus when players are not in a co-op session.

1 Manage The Bat Family

A cutscene featuring characters in Gotham Knights

One of the most innovative things in Gotham Knights is that it allows players to switch between the four heroes at the home base aka the Belfry. Players could start as Batgirl, not like her, and then switch to Nightwing without a penalty. All heroes level up alongside one another too and equipment also gets unlocked in tandem. The only downside to this system is that players can’t go into the menus and manage their characters individually without transferring power over fully to that character.

To look at Red Hood’s skill tree, players have to become Red Hood. It is honestly not that big of a deal since the load times are fast on the new consoles. Still, in an effort to help streamline the game more, it would save so much time if these four heroes could be customized in the same menus without needing to change characters.

Gotham Knights was released on October 21, 2022, and is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
