Sony's Santa Monica Studio has released a brand-new update for God of War Ragnarok that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 gamers can download now. God of War Ragnarok launched last week to rave reviews, standing tall as one of the highest-rated new video game releases of the year.

God of War Ragnarok reviews have been highly complementary about the game's graphics, story, and gameplay, hailing it as a worthy follow-up to the landmark 2018 release. The game has enjoyed near-universal acclaim from critics, but there's always room for improvement. In that spirit, Santa Monica has sent out God of War Ragnarok update 2.02, which addresses various issues across the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.

It's true that God of War Ragnarok is a cross-gen release available for both PS4 and PS5, but the versions of the game are not necessarily created equal. God of War Ragnarok's PS5 version looks better, runs better, and performs better than its PS4 counterpart, though the PS4 version should be in better shape after update 2.02. On the PS5 side, God of War Ragnarok update 2.02 performs vague "service adjustments," while the PS4 version fixes crashes that were plaguing the game. These crashes were also present in the PS5 version of God of War Ragnarok at one point, but they were fixed with the day one update. It's unclear why PS4 gamers had to wait longer for the fixes to come to their version of the game.

The crashes fixed by God of War Ragnarok update 2.02 include one that would happen after the game's first boss fight, and another that would happen "randomly during gameplay." Another crash was associated with using the Platinum Wireless Headset when playing the game on PS4, and that issue has also been resolved as of update 2.02.

God of War Ragnarok is a polished experience with little in the way of game-breaking bugs or major glitches, so it's unclear how often it will receive updates. However, it's possible that there will be more substantial content updates for God of War Ragnarok that aim to add new features to the experience. For example, the 2018 God of War game received a New Game+ feature after launch, and so some are expecting God of War Ragnarok to add New Game+ at some point as well, though official plans to that effect have not been announced at the time of this writing.
