While the last mainline entry in the series, God of War 3, was a bombastic, action-heavy tale of warring gods and blood-soaked revenge set before a mythological Greek backdrop, God of War was a relatively somber, character-driven piece based in the Norse realms.
For those looking to better link how Kratos went from one of gaming's bloodthirstiest anti-heroes to a grieving father searching for repentance, a new tie-in comic series from Dark Horse will seemingly offer the answers. Slated to release on March 10, God of War: Fallen God will take place between the events of God of War 3 and 2018's God of War, with the comic showing Kratos' journey between both games.
The adventure begins right after the God of War slaughtered Zeus and ended Athena's schemes, as he sails for a distant desert in an effort to leave his past behind him. The tale that follows will mostly deal with Kratos' battle with himself, as he wrestles with his "rage and guilt." Fallen God will be penned by Chris Roberson and illustrated by Tony Parker, who fans may recognize as the duo behind Dark Horse's 2018 God of War prequel comic. They will be reprising their work on the franchise, going even further back to better establish the events leading up to Sony Santa Monica's critically acclaimed reboot.
Thanks to IGN, fans can get a closer look at the comic before its release, with the publication providing closer looks at the first issue's cover and opening pages. It appears the tale will begin with Kratos coming to terms with his immortality and attempting to rid himself of the Blades of Chaos, trying to throw the weapons into the sea just to watch them return. It looks to be an interesting delve into Kratos as a character and a must-read for franchise fans wanting further clarification on the events leading up to 2018's God of War.
On the games' front, Sony Santa Monica has revealed that Kratos and Atreus will return through a sequel, which will allegedly be released this year. Although there's no confirmation on the game's plot, it seems wise to assume it will continue the plot of the previous game, as both the God of War and his son are pursued by Thor while the inevitable events of Ragnarok loom in the distance. It's easily one of the most anticipated games slated for this year, especially considering its predecessor is hailed as one of the last generation's most essential experiences.
