Prior to the launch of God of War 3, there were rumors that Sony Santa Monica was planning on including some sort of multiplayer mode. While the final product was a single player only affair, those rumors carried over to the inevitable sequel and the latest rumors have God of War 4 featuring multiplayer as a co-op mode with Kratos and Deimos.

Beware, there are spoilers ahead, so if you have yet to play God of War 3 and God of War: Ghost of Sparta you will be subject to spoilers.

While the most we know about God of War 4 is that it's likely been in development for quite a while, sources close to PSM3 claim that it certainly is in development and that it'll feature multiplayer component, previously rumored about back in May.

According to the publication, God of War 4 could include a co-op mode with one player as Kratos and the other as his brother Deimos as they try to escape from the Afterlife - something Kratos has already done twice. Co-op does seem to be the most likely way of including multiplayer in the God of War series, as we're not exactly sure how well competitive Team Deathmatch would pan out.

"Why is it hot? It’s bringing double Kratos to the series. GOW 4 was confirmed to PSM3 mid-2011 by a reliable source, and rumors point to a multiplayer twist. Mad idea? Online co-op with a (possibly) dead Kratos and (very) dead brother Deimos teaming up to escape the afterlife."

The God of War franchise is certainly a successful one for Sony and after God of War 3's very open ending it would only make sense for them to want to continue the series. Multiplayer seems likely as it is a popular fan request and something major publishers are pushing for to add value and accessibility to later installments in key franchises (see: Mass Effect 3).

The God of War games have always been a solitary affair and I'm worried how the inclusion of an AI companion (Deimos) would affect the story. In this case, it's best to be cautiously optimistic.
