‘God of War: Ascension’ Outed By Amazon; Not ‘God of War 4′

God of War Ascension Sony Amazon Tease

In a long tradition of “accidents” by popular retailers, Amazon let the cat out of the bag and revealed Sony’s next God of War game by publishing the game’s product page a day before the official announcement.

We’re referring to Sony’s earlier tease planned for the 19th, tomorrow. Some readers may find this a little too coincidental, even calling shenanigans on the retailer, and that’s… that’s probably accurate. Since then the listing has been taken down, but its marketing purpose was fulfilled.

God of War was an epic trilogy that set the bar for action games, inspiring many that followed to adopt its style of combat and upgrade system, and others to edge into blatant rip-off territory. With a game so substantial, what is a developer to do when the series ends its run? They can either keep going forward anyway, disregarding any closure that had been established, continue to make spinoffs or side-tales, or make the often popular prequel.

That’s the route Sony has chosen and Kratos’ tale leading up to the first game will start with God of War: Ascension. Amazon’s listing had this to say about the upcoming title:

“Join Kratos as he seeks freedom, redemption, and the clarity to avenge his family in the most ambitious God of War adventure in the series so far.”

Apparently slaughtering the whole of Olympus wasn’t ambitious enough. As another special treat, the listing contained a short CG teaser trailer that mildly elaborates on the upcoming adventure — so mild, in fact, it doesn’t really say much of anything, but it is pretty to look at [Click to see full version].

While it’s not exactly the sequel (God of War 4) fans were expecting, it should be interesting to peek into the life of Kratos before he became the Ghost of Sparta. Is he going to be as much fun without his anger management issues and huge, deadly blades welded to his arms by chains? Inquiring minds want to know. More information should hit the streets tomorrow when Sony officially announces the title. Ok, now check out the bloody trailer already! Seriously, it’s really bloody.

God of War: Ascension is expected to release sometime in 2013. Stay tuned to Game Rant as the story develops.

  1. I’ll play this, but I’m kind of disappointed that it’s a prequel. I know enough about Kratos’s backstory. I’d have rather gotten a God of War 4, or some sort of spin-off.

  2. Are you f*cking kidding me? Another freakin prequal? I personally would rather see them make another whole new epic trilogy than see more prequals.

  3. Why is it such a big deal to developers to keep development of games a secret? Does the fact that they’re working on a new GoW or Dead Space game have anything to do with announcing it early online? I mean seriously, gamers aren’t idiots. Obviously there will be sequels to games that are massively successful. Halo 4 is a good example considering Halo 3 was supposed to be ‘the end of the trilogy.’ Who cares if Amazon lets a release date slip, it’s not going to make the game come out any sooner or change the fact that they are working on it….

    • It builds hype. Developers release little tidbits as the game is developed. That way, once it is officially announced, you only have to “wait” about a year. While you actually have to wait closer to three, you know its easyer when its kept under wraps.

  4. All the gods are dead you can’t make another game from that, so a how it all began is the best idea.

    • Well, I thought they kind of left it open with Athena as the new villain.
