Ghost Recon: Future Soldier AI improvements

Whenever a game places you in the shoes of elite fighting warriors as you mow down the countless number of enemies staged between you and your objective, you can’t help but feel like a bad-ass. There is a problem though and if you have played any previous incarnation of the Ghost Recon series, you’ll know immediately that your squadmate AI does not act like it should. You know, like highly trained special operatives with really expensive weapons and equipment. Rest assured though, in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, the problem will be fixed.

In an interview with Xbox 360 World, a producer of Future Soldier, Justin Drust admitted that squad AI wasn’t really the best in the world and would often times have the opposite effect of following your orders. Getting in your line of sight, not moving to your designated location, or simply firing at the wrong area. These problems, Drust assures, have been acknowledged and are being worked on for the next Ghost Recon game. In addition, you will no longer have to “babysit” your AI by sending them to cover if you want them staying out of trouble.

“We heard that. You know, in past games if you gave them an order sometimes they’d just kinda get in front of you and block your shot and it was like ‘come on man!’ Real world spec op guys know where to go and what to do and they’re not going to run in front of your line of fire. We wanted to really improve that; you can still manipulate and micromanage them but if you leave them to their own device they’re not going to be mindless AI that sits behind you anymore.”

I really do enjoy the Ghost Recon series very much; the stories aren’t bad, the gameplay is fun, and having a peek into the possibilities and potential of the military has always been fascinating to me. Yes, I have had issues with the titles, including the aforementioned AI issues, along with camera problems, hit detection, and a sometimes complicated control setup. Those problems haven’t deterred me from playing both titles (and beating them on Hard!) and Future Soldier looks way too good to pass up.

Oh, and of course there’s the co-op gameplay which is always a win here at Game Rant.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier will be dropping tangos from the shadows sometime in Q1 2011 for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, DS, and PSP.

  1. Co-op is the reason I play these games. Nothing like a tactical shooter where mistakes take you out of the fight with some friends.

    Ghost Recon 2 and Ghost Recon 2 Summit strike had some of the best local 4-player co-op ever, which you just cant mind in most games this generation :(

  2. Man, they’re announcing a feature that even “meh” games are sure to add in? Obviously just got over-looked, hope someday co-op with another pair of AI’s will actually be comparable. Looking forward to seeing what ghost recon is going to bring to the party next.
