After the insane amounts of critical acclaim Gears of War 3 has received, it would be an injustice for it to not be a commercial success. In what is definitely great news for both Epic and Microsoft, Gears of War 3 passed the three million sales mark in only its first week. This makes it the biggest launch of 2011, and the sixth largest Xbox 360 launch week of all time.
Both Gears of War and Gears of War 2 have reached over six million lifetime sales each, and with already three million sales in its first week Gears of War 3 looks like it will 0nce again be a huge financial success.
Gears of War 3 had a huge worldwide release, with over 20 000 retailers holding a midnight launch for the title. The game already had over one million pre orders since May, and those numbers are said to have increased to 1.5 million by the time the game hit store shelves. Theses numbers are hardly surprising especially when one considers the fan following Gears of War has.
Of course it hasn’t been all fun and sunshine for the Epic team, who have received quite a lot of backlash for the Gears of War Season Pass and the launch DLC. The team also had to deal with the leak and potential spoilers that arose just a month before the Gears 3 launch, though it’s safe to say they have recovered nicely.
Gears of War 3 is making the rounds here at Game Rant seeing as how it has pretty much received universal critical acclaim. In our review, Gears of War 3 received a perfect score and is recognized by nearly all as the best in the series to date.
As the holiday season begins, the only title that can likely dethrone Gears of War 3 as 2011′s biggest launch is Modern Warfare 3. It doesn’t matter what Epic – or anyone for that matter – does, it would take more than a fantastic action title to claim the top sales spot this year.
Gears of War 3 is available now, exclusively for the Xbox 360.
