US Gamers Spent Over $25b On Games in ’09

Most of your money went to video games.Last year over 180 million US gamers spent over $25 billion on games. This averages out to around $140 spent per gamer. Of that $25 billion, over $15 billion was spent on consoles (which includes the handheld DS and PSP).

What really impressed me was that nearly 30% of gaming revenue was made from PC and online gaming (not including MMOs). In a world where PC gaming is supposedly dead, it looks to be doing very good for itself, pulling in roughly $7 billion.

More amazing is the mobile phone market. I remember a time, not too long ago, when the best game you could get on your phone was Snake. Time has most certainly changed. Last year mobile phone and iPod touch gaming racked in over $1 billion. That is a lot of games if you figure the average game costs between $1 and $5.

These numbers are of course boosted by the greatest selling game of all time, Modern Warfare 2, being released at the end of last year. MW2 alone made nearly $1 billion at the end of 2009. With its Stimulus Packages setting records as well, 2010 looks to be an even better year for game companies.

Bill Gates Has Enough Money To Buy All Of Your Games, Twice.Just for your information, Bill Gates could have paid for everyone in the US’s games last year, and thrown in an extra copy just for giggles, and he would still be a billionaire.

Do you fall above or below the average of $140 spent per gamer last year? I easily helped make up for the people that only spent a few dollars on iPhone games. How much did you spend last year? Let us hear it in the comments.

  1. Yowza. A few of my bucks are in there ;)

  2. Bill Gates needs to be doing that, since he's aiming for that whole philanthropy angle of his life now. The gaming industry is booming, not just at home, as it would seem. Gaming on the go is becoming a large part of people's every day lives that I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers doubled for this year.

  3. I definitely spend more than the average….

  4. Me too. $140 dollars is hardly even 3 games. That seems so small!
