What Comes Next for Uncharted 3’s Nathan Drake?

Nathan Drake Next Game

Uncharted‘s Nathan Drake has taken players around the world, to a forgotten island located in the Pacific Ocean, deep through a Himalayan Valley, and trekking through the heart of the jungle. Next November we’ll follow Drake on his next adventure into the Arabian Desert in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. But could that be the final chapter in the saga of Nathan Drake? Naughty Dog‘s game director Justin Richmond recently took time for an interview with EDGE magazine to shed some light on the possibility of there being further adventures in Drake’s future.

Naughty Dog has a proud laundry list of past projects that truly show their commitment to excellence when it comes to giving gamers fun, immersive, and entertaining experiences. The quality of work is proven with every new release, bringing us the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and most recently the Uncharted series.  What they do is create some of the most compelling worlds in modern gaming, while delivering socially significant protagonists that truly immerse us, as players, into the narrative.

In the interview Richmond explained Naughty Dog’s reluctance to simply “reboot” their current flagship series, citing one familiar example that doesn’t escape the public:

“You see it in the movies,…They constantly reboot things you just saw ten years ago. You’re like: ‘Wait a minute. I just saw that!’ Spider-Man is just ridiculous. It’s something you have to be careful of with any kind of creative endeavour, and the lure to reinvent yourself is always there.”

Interesting for him to take a shot at Spider-Man like that. Leaving superheroes behind, Richmond went on to say what every fan of the Uncharted series has likely been waiting to hear:

“But one good thing is that we feel we’re not done with Drake yet; we haven’t done all we wanted to do, and there are still technical hurdles and goals we want to get over, and do even more stuff in gameplay… We’re very cogniscent of the legacy of what Drake is, and that every game should advance the story and the genre.”

Kaboom, information dropped! This means that at the very least, Naughty Dog has plans to continue Drake as long as they can make it work correctly, as not to distort the character they’ve already created. What is not clear yet is how the story will be continued. Will it be in the form of Uncharted: 4? Or maybe he’s just referring to downloadable content on the horizon. Maybe even both!

Richmond has already spoken about the massive additions and advancements that the team has developed for Uncharted 3, and it’s clear that the third installment will be giving players more freedom than they’re used to.

Now we can rest assured that Naughty Dog is interested in continuing the Nathan Drake Legacy we’ve all come to know and love! So Ranters, what do you think Justin Richmond is referring to? Do you think it will be Uncharted 4 or extra DLC? Do you think Mark Wahlberg will master the role of Nathan Drake in the Uncharted Movie?

We’ll all get an idea of how much the developer is advancing the product this time around, when Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is released for the PS3 on November 1, 2011.

Drake is a great character, and the writing and voice acting in the series is second to none.

That said, I can’t see how Naughty Dog could put him in a game that is fundamentally different from the Uncharted titles, and too many trips to the well could spoil the whole thing.

Hmm, agreed. It’s a tough decision, since that character is so well defined and well designed. Maybe if they go to some major depths in UC3, it could open the door for even more character development.

Funny that this comes just days after Rockstar said the same thing about Red Dead, it’s such a tricky task in games, movies, and tv to reiterate and still keep it new. Hopefully UC3 will really impress on a character level.

Uncharted 4 could be could be set in disneyworld for all i care and i would still buy it. I’m pretty sure they could find an interesting enough story to keep me playing and maybe he’ll face his fear of Clowns lol. Shooting goons from rollercoasters (a la Zombieland), going toe to toe with costumed villains, etc. The possibilities of things could be nearly endless.

    Uncharted 4: Troubled Kingdom…

They should make an uncharted 4 whereas we can play co-op campaign, introducing a young new character. that might be different, and then go in a whole new direction?
