The month of May will bring with it a lot of exciting things. The release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is high on gamers’ lists of new releases and Destiny’s House of Wolves DLC is sure to garner a ton of attention when it drops on May 19th. But of course a new month also means new free games.

Today both Sony and Microsoft confirmed their selection of “free” games for their PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold subscribers, respectively. While Xbox’s selection is to follow in another post, Sony’s free PlayStation games are revealed below.

Starting first with PS4, PlayStation Plus subscribers will unlock access to Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition and Ether One exclusively on the current-gen platform. Guacamelee is sure to be a real treat for PS4 owners who missed out on the game the first few times around. It’s basically like a tongue-in-cheek Metroidvania game, with an awesome Luchador theme.

Ether, on the other hand, is a more serious affair – a first person puzzler that explores mental illness. We don’t know too much about the game, but that’s oftentimes what makes these PS Plus games so great: they introduce gamers to titles they might not have checked out otherwise.

Guacamelee Review

The next three games on the list – The Unfinished Swan, Race the Sun, and Hohokum – are available across all three major PlayStation platforms. So, while players may choose to enjoy all of these games on their new PS4, they can also take them on the go with Vita as well.

All three games feature a unique art style and gameplay approach, and will surely show off what the creative side of PlayStation development can offer. We’d highly recommend The Unfinished Swan for its stark use of color amidst a black and white background, while Hohokum offers that whimsical, almost trance-like experience.

And finally, Vita owners (in addition to the above three games) can enjoy Murasaki Baby, a peculiar puzzle game from Ovosonico. It may look a little strange based on the art, but Murasaki Baby is actually worth a look.

To recap, here’s the full rundown of free PlayStation Plus games for May:

  • Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition (PS4, PS3, Vita)
  • Ether (PS4, PS3, Vita)
  • The Unfinished Swan (PS4, PS3, Vita)
  • Race the Sun (PS4, PS3, Vita)
  • Hohokum (PS4, PS3, Vita)
  • Murasaki Baby (Vita)

Free PS Plus Games May 2015

It appears that the general theme for this month is creative art styles, as all six games boast unique aesthetics not typically featured in the average triple-A release. Of course, with those unique art style comes a decidedly off-kilter approach, which means these games may not be for everyone.

While PlayStation Plus has been solid in terms of supporting its full console line-up, many PS4 owners have been mostly disappointed by the overabundance of indies. It’s true they are great indies, but when PS3’s PS Plus selection included high profile titles like Batman: Arkham City and Uncharted 3 subscribers got a little spoiled. Still, five games available on PS4 is tough to beat, and as we mentioned they are all pretty great games.
