First came the Comic-Con reveal of none other than Freddy Krueger as a playable character for Mortal Kombat, and now comes a trailer that gives a brief introduction to Freddy’s storyline along with quick looks at his skill set.

The first issue addressed in the trailer is how Krueger — the master of the dream world — can participate in Mortal Kombat. As it turns out, Shao Kahn, the Roger Goedell of Mortal Kombat, brought Krueger into the mortal realm much like many of the protagonists of the Nightmare on Elm Street films did, simply by holding onto him during a dream.

And speaking of those films, it’s great to hear the iconic “1, 2 Freddy’s coming for you…” theme play out during the trailer. It might not enhance any of the Mortal Kombat side of things, but it’s pitch perfect for fans of the horror film franchise.

Unfortunately the trailer doesn’t give any decent looks at what a Freddy Krueger fatality might look like, but it does address gamers' worries that his move set will be all scratches and claws. He might not be gamers' first choice in serious fare like the EVO tournament, but for a little bit of fun he’s worth your time.

As a fighter, Krueger fits right in with the likes of Johnny Cage or some of the announced DLC characters like Kenshi or Scarlet, but it still feels a bit weird to see such an uncharacteristically non-Mortal Kombat fighter being rendered in the game’s engine. And the fact that they went with the lesser-known Jackie Earle Haley iteration rather than the more popular Robert Englund portrayal is a bit confusing, but perhaps it was a rights issue for Warner Bros.

Krueger is set to invade your nightmares tomorrow, so if you really want to see how his skill set works against more traditional Mortal Kombat fighters you’ll be able to experience that first-hand. Until then, try to stay awake.

What do you think of Krueger’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat after seeing a bit of him in action? Will you be picking up this DLC character when he releases tomorrow?

Mortal Kombat is available now for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Freddy Krueger joins the roster tomorrow, August 9th, for $4.99 or 400 MS Points.
