Five Nights at Freddy's creator, Scott Cawthon, has received a lot of negativity over the past year for the quantity of Five Nights at Freddy's sequels he's produced in so little time. Some probably breathed a sigh of relief, then, when Cawthon announced that there wouldn't be a Five Nights at Freddy's 5.

Finding out that Cawthon's next project is an RPG, not another jumpscare horror game, may please gamers even more. However, it would seem that the Freddy's creator isn't branching out quite as far as people might expect.

Cawthon has been tight-lipped up until now about his next project, but he finally announced it today on the Five Nights At Freddy's 4 Steam Community forum. The creator says that he's working on an RPG entitled FNAF World, which will not be a continuation of the current Five Nights at Freddy's storyline. However, FNAF World will feature many familiar faces from prior Freddy's games, and variants thereof, including "classic, withered, phantom, and nightmare versions."

While some gamers might expect the Freddy's creations to be the enemies, that's apparently not the case. Cawthon notes that he's been steadily working on the models of the classic FNAF characters, and he'll soon be shifting to enemy characters. Perhaps the most surprising announcement of all is the revelation that the game won't be horror-centric at all, with Cawthon stating:

"...I wanted to use these characters in a new and fun way because they are so near and dear to my heart, and I was excited to work on a type of game that I hadn't made in a long time... It will not be a horror game, but a role playing game where you create a party using the huge selection of characters from the FNAF games."

Creating yet another Five Nights at Freddy's game may seem like Cawthon is continuing to milk the franchise, but an RPG is certainly different. The game doesn't have a general release window yet, due to game's "large scope," but he promises to release a free demo when he has enough material ready.

While four FNAF games in the course of a year may seem like overkill to many, the creator says that to this day, no one has figured out Five Nights at Freddy's true story just yet. With a Halloween update to Five Nights at Freddy's 4 coming out soon, fans of the series don't have to worry about giving up their beloved Freddy's creations anytime soon, even if the new RPG won't include the jumpscares the series is known for.

Cawthon previously told his critics that he'd been working as hard as he could for the past year to release all of these games. While said critics may be irritated to learn that yet another Freddy's game is on the way, it seems like Cawthon has no interest in taking it easy anytime soon.
