Square Enix has finally announced the Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster release date, after the first three 2D remasters in the Final Fantasy series were released in July. Fans don’t have long to wait to get their hands on the updated RPG, as it is coming very soon.

While the first three 2D Remasters in the mega-popular franchise were released on the same day, Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster is the only game in the series releasing on September 8. There is still no news on when the final two entries are coming.

Final Fantasy 4 centers around dark knight Cecil, and his expanding crew of allies, who revolt against the tyrannical Baron. The fourth entry in the long-running series was notable at the time for introducing the ATB system, making the battles play out in real-time. Its unique story and gameplay can now be played with a host of upgrades and tweaks, including:

  • Updated 2D pixel graphical improvements redrawn for modern hardware
  • Rearranged soundtracks, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu
  • Updated controls, modernized UI, and auto-battle options
  • Extras like the bestiary, illustration gallery, music player and the ability to save at any time

These are some of the best features found in the previous pixel remasters, so it's reassuring to see them confirmed as carrying over to the fourth.

Final Fantasy 4 Pixel Remaster can be pre-ordered now on Mobile or Steam for a 20% discount. Other pre-order bonuses include an additional three songs and two wallpaper images. Alternatively, fans can purchase a bundle containing all six remasters for 22% off, and will receive the bonus songs and wallpapers from all of the classic RPG titles in the collection. The remastered versions of Final Fantasy Five and Final Fantasy Six will be available for download at a later date in 2021.

It’s good to finally get a set date for the fourth installment of the iconic RPG series. While the poor text quality didn’t go down too well with fans, the updated character models, remixed soundtrack, and quality of life improvements were big upgrades over the older ported versions. Not having to dig out a PS3 or Nintendo Wii to play on a bigger screen is also a huge bonus.

However, console owners still aren’t happy about the collection skipping them over. Not everybody has access to, or likes, gaming on a PC, and even less like playing big titles like Final Fantasy on their Mobile. Even the Switch was passed over, which seems like the perfect way to experience the remasters. Square Enix has said that it will release the titles for consoles if there is enough demand. How much demand is enough is hard to say, as many console owners have already complained that they want in on the retro action.
