Square Enix surprised Final Fantasy fans today by releasing a brand-new trailer for Final Fantasy 16, set to launch in summer 2023 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Final Fantasy fans have been anxiously awaiting a new Final Fantasy 16 trailer for quite some time, and now they have a sizable one to sink their teeth into that showcases the game's impressive-looking world, its various characters, and some of its epic-scale boss battles.

The latest Final Fantasy 16 trailer explains more of the game's story, explaining the background of Valisthea, its various kingdoms, and the key players involved. Like many Final Fantasy games before it, crystals play an important role in Final Fantasy 16's story, with their importance stressed in the new trailer. Eikons, the summons in Final Fantasy 16, are also given a big spotlight in the latest trailer, as are their Dominants.

The Final Fantasy 16 trailer mostly consists of cutscenes and dialogue between the game's various characters, but it does feature some glimpses at gameplay. This mainly comes in the form of boss fights, with Final Fantasy 16 Eikons fighting each other. In the trailer, players can see Phoenix do battle with the Eikon of Fire, and they can also briefly see Ifrit square off against the likes of Bahamut and Titan.

While Final Fantasy 16's Eikons are a major focus of the trailer, fans can also see protagonist Clive Rosfield do battle as well. Highlighting Final Fantasy 16's flashy combat, Clive fights powerful foes in Hugo and Benedikta. Besides human enemies, Clive also finds himself fighting an Eikon, taking on the massive Odin summon that has been a mainstay in the Final Fantasy franchise for decades.

Unfortunately, a specific Final Fantasy 16 release date wasn't revealed with the new trailer, but it did reiterate that the game is on track for a summer 2023 release. Of course, it's always possible that development will hit a snag and fans will have to wait later than expected to play the game, so they should keep that in mind before getting too excited. However, it was said months ago that Final Fantasy 16 was in the final stages of development, so chances seem good that it will meet its release window.

Fans can expect plenty more Final Fantasy 16 trailers between now and the game's release date next year. Hopefully one of the upcoming trailers shines some much-needed light on the Final Fantasy 16 release date so fans know exactly when they'll get to play the highly-anticipated game for themselves.
