When Square Enix registered a domain for Final Fantasy XIII-3 most wrote it off as a pre-emptive measure, not necessarily a guarantee. After disappointing fans with the true Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix wanted to give that world another go before closing the book on Lightning and her chums, but that was presumed to be it. However, that may not be the case.
Before reading on be warned that spoilers for Final Fantasy XIII-2 are about to follow, but they don’t reveal anything about the content of the ending, only the final moment, which, if it’s true, is extremely disappointing.
According to a review from Game Informer, Final Fantasy XIII-2, after dealing out a few plot resolutions, ends with the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers: a “to be continued” screen. Nothing whatsoever follows those three little words…nothing, not even a post-credits scene.
Now, it can be assumed that, given Square Enix’s big words about bi-monthly DLC, and the rumor that Lightning will get her own story in them, this “to be continued” is only meant to pave the way for said DLC, but according to the GI reviewer that is not the case. I wouldn’t say never, but also I’ve yet to get my hands on the game.
So, while Final Fantasy XIII-2 is Square Enix’s chance for redemption, it’s also apparently the second game in what may become a trilogy. It really makes you wonder if, at this rate, we will every see any of those other Final Fantasy XIII offshoots, or another true Final Fantasy for that matter.
To end a game on a cliffhanger is one thing, but to do so in a game that no one was expecting, and whose predecessor, the one that the sequel is actually continuing the story of, resolved the game’s events nicely is a bold move to say the least. But, if Square Enix has cleaned up many of the problems gamers had with FF XIII, then maybe, just maybe, this particular “series” is worth seeing continue.

Versus is ps3 only. When it will come out is anybodies guess. With no news on any games from SE, we can only assume it will be in the next year or two.
XIII-3 will probably be out before Versus at this rate.

20th – 23rd September. At the interview they stated that they also felt that the XIII story was incomplete and that the DLC was not enough to end it. Also stated that work on a new project was underway, and when asked if the project was XIII-3 they would not answer, but smiled. Looking positive.

It was a press conference in Japan during the ultimainia omega event. translations of it indicate clearly that they have started the project. You should be able to google it to find out more. A release date will likely be Winter 2013

Sony and Microsoft have pretty much made it clear that for the next couple of years at least there won’t be a new generation console, so unlikely it would be made for them. That said with the “New Project” already underway, with all the gameplay mechanics in place, it could be ready for the start of next summer. Unlikely but possible. People working on games are not allowed to reveal details so early in development, its generally a golden rule with gaming companies. All we can do is wait, but many people, particually in Japan are really in favour of it.

Yea I would like to play as snow , sazh , hope , fang , vanielle, and Noel I would personally play as Snow, Sazh and Hope or Noel as the third one. If those where the characters available
The CEO of SE has said that a FF7 remake would not happen until they decided that they wont make anymore FF games that exceed 7′s success. Also the Directer of the XIII series has said that out sourcing some parts of development to other western compainies is the way forawrd so that the size of the team, communication and time of development is much less problematic then it was for XIII that took 5 years. As a result XIII-2 took 2 years to be released, which proves it works.
Also in the XIII-2 Ultimainia Omega, Toriyama teased “With Lightning remaining in the crystal but still keeping her heart, you could say that the world of Final Fantasy XIII will be permanently dead. I’m praying for the day to come that Lightning will surely awaken and Serah will be rewarded. Like Lightning advancing one step forward in the secret event, I think we want to take a step forward to advance our own project. From now on, I’d be happy if you could anticipate it.”
In the XIII Ultimainia Omega they said this: Toriyama “The main reason they decided to make a sequel is that there was demand throughout the world and because the development staff wanted to portray Lightning’s character further, to give her a clear conclusion. I also want to write a story where Lightning and her friends end up happy.”
Many people (particually in Japan) believe this is yet another strong hint that the XIII-3 project is underway, as they already have the domain name too. Plus an SE representative would have made a statment by now saying that there is no XIII-3 being made, which has not come.

Also as they now plan to out source parts of development to other companies they own like they did with XIII-2, then the time it takes for new games will be much less

All indications are that FFXV and FFXIII-3 are differnt games being made by seperate teams. In fact FFXV, has not even anywhere near development as yet. As for XIII-3 the announcment is expected on August 31st as part of the FF 25th Anniversary. Apart from FF Theatrhythm, as they are releasing tracks to download all Summer. A XIII-3 is even more likely as what we’ve seen over the past 6 months or so is that The development teams in interviews have ruled out remakes and remasters (in particular FF7)and any rumours that have arised has been quickly dismissed by the teams or a SE representative. But with the many rumors on a XIII-3, they have not just stayed silent, but infact given hints in interviews that the story was not concluded. Only around 6 weeks to wait till we get the expected news we want.

At some point there will be, but that would be done by another team. Likely team 4. There are a few FF titles rumored to be announced on the anniversary next month. As with everything with SE, they will only give hints. The only game that appears to be obvious at the moment is XIII-3. Hopefully more info on games like FFXIV will come to light nearer the time. All we can do is wait, for just over a month.
