Is ‘Final Fantasy 13-3′ Really a Possibility?

Final Fantasy 13-3 a Real Possibility

When Square Enix registered a domain for Final Fantasy XIII-3 most wrote it off as a pre-emptive measure, not necessarily a guarantee. After disappointing fans with the true Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix wanted to give that world another go before closing the book on Lightning and her chums, but that was presumed to be it. However, that may not be the case.

Before reading on be warned that spoilers for Final Fantasy XIII-2 are about to follow, but they don’t reveal anything about the content of the ending, only the final moment, which, if it’s true, is extremely disappointing.

According to a review from Game Informer, Final Fantasy XIII-2, after dealing out a few plot resolutions, ends with the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers: a “to be continued” screen. Nothing whatsoever follows those three little words…nothing, not even a post-credits scene.

Now, it can be assumed that, given Square Enix’s big words about bi-monthly DLC, and the rumor that Lightning will get her own story in them, this “to be continued” is only meant to pave the way for said DLC, but according to the GI reviewer that is not the case. I wouldn’t say never, but also I’ve yet to get my hands on the game.

So, while Final Fantasy XIII-2 is Square Enix’s chance for redemption, it’s also apparently the second game in what may become a trilogy. It really makes you wonder if, at this rate, we will every see any of those other Final Fantasy XIII offshoots, or another true Final Fantasy for that matter.

To end a game on a cliffhanger is one thing, but to do so in a game that no one was expecting, and whose predecessor, the one that the sequel is actually continuing the story of, resolved the game’s events nicely is a bold move to say the least. But, if Square Enix has cleaned up many of the problems gamers had with FF XIII, then maybe, just maybe, this particular “series” is worth seeing continue.

How do you feel about Final Fantasy XIII-2 ending with a cliffhanger and Square Enix releasing Final Fantasy XIII-3? Is it about time to start thinking Final Fantasy XV?

Final Fantasy XIII-2 releases January 31, 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

  1. HEYA!
I personally think FF13 was great at its own, unique storyline, pretty easy, great designs, etc…. Though I do agree it’s somehow lacking something, BUT you have to agree the second installment of this game is really backing this story back up, or even pumping it (the whole interfaces?)!
In my opinion, FF13-2 is a MASSIVE improvement compared to the first one, which is really good. Maybe Square Enix wants to increase the players for FF13 series and wanted to make the future (gaming) better to alter that past back for the better too? Haha well I don’t know, it does sound like in the game but who knows?
I mean– Motivation and inspiration kept pumping up when I watched the whole storyline going, it’s like it is speaking to me!

Looking at a different view, the game’s impact is really strong – The morality, the characters’ determination, etc… There are lesser games like these and I personally think Square Enix has certainly touched many souls who played this fantastic, wonderful game. Thank you Square Enix. So MAYBE that is why Square Enix wants to continue deliver the warm messages to all gamers around the world – and maybe when all hope is lost in the second installment ending, that is where players are left with the message that life isn’t that bright and easy? Well, hopefully FF13-3 is back with some more new hopes! There are tons of people who lost hope in this world, and why not give the game a chance and quit that selfish whining of yours? The game is indirectly helping the community, lighting hopes rather than some really bloody gory games.

This is my own opinion and I dared to speak them out, because the game certainly is awesome and epic in many ways. Thank you again for the developers and others!

    • I could’nt agree more Reirobin. Final fantasy xiii-2 was without a doubt the best game i ever played. Everything about the game was perfect for me, yes it did lack something but this is more of a reason for square to improve on the next instalment, right?
The ending of 13 chocked me and even more so with 13-2 it shed a tear to my eye if i’m honest. I just pray Square will finish of the sequel and not forget about it. That dont mean no s***** DLC Square not that i dont appreciate it, i love it. It’s just not enough to finish the story i want final fantasy 13-3! and i want it now lol! as do millions of other gamers like me i’m sure.

  2. I personally enjoyed XIII bit dissapointed there wasnt much to explore but showed the beginning of great potential, potential that they then used in XIII-2 by listening to fans, XIII-2 is an all round great game that definatly needs XIII-3 to finish it off, not DLC, its wrong if they make 2 great games and then cant even give us the ending on disk, i havent spent 200hours in 2 games and 80pound in cash for them to finish the XIII series with DLC, ive played each FF since 7 (not including online) and enjoyed each (part for 10-2) cause i dont compare one FF to another cause they don’t follow on, other than the series games, so each game is its own game and on that merit i believe each to be great. So im all for XIII-3 as i believe SE are doing a good job.

  3. Hey I love Final Fantasy 13 1 and 2 both games have really touch my heart both endings had made me cry and I cant get over both games after i complete both games i keep playing them because its the best game i have ever played. im hoping that Square Enix will be making Final Fantasy 13 3 because at the end of Final Fantasy 13 2 when Serah died and Lightning was frozen and that Hope was able to get Vanille and Fang out and the game ended like that i was upset, sad, mad, and i was crying and how it said “To Be Continue” i was furious and i said that they better make another Final Fantasy 13 3 i love the graphics the game plan everything about Final Fantasy 13 its the best video game i have ever played and i just love that game so so much so please Square Enix please make Final Fantasy 13 3 please im begging u can not end a game like that thank u though for making the best video game ever im a huge fan of Final Fantasy 13 thank u u guys are my heroes.

  4. I do have alot to say. I will state first of all I will be open minded on this topic. I am a gamer and proud of it. FFXIII was a good game. It had a few quirks but overall I enjoyed it, the characters and the story. My friend thought that FFXIII-2 was going to be a disappointment because of SE’s attempt at 10-2. I love how FFXIII-2 Played and how the story picked up from the previous installment.

The entire time I Played the game I was thinking to myself “How am I going to kill someone that cant be killed.” This is not my first blog I have read on this topic and it seems that a FFXIII-3 is 50-50 among people. Out of six blogs its even with those pointed and hoping for another installment and those who think the DLC should cover it.

This is my opinon but I thought about how FFXIII-2 ended and how can you continue from that event? Adventure time in Vahalla?? It will be extreamly tough since the world was consumed into chaos and a world only exists in a timeless place like that. I personally would love a FFXIII-3 It will be preatty cool because I can not get enough of Sahz and Lighting.

If SE’s intensions are to finish the story with the DLC it would be very disappointing. For FF fans to wait and get FFXIII-2 for 60$ (U.S) play it to the end and expect the series to play out with a bang in the end and then find out that they have to pay more money if interested in a DLC that lasts maybe a hour or two for maybe 10$ to get the ending is preatty absurd. I will end by saying that I loved the game not the ending and plus I need to kniw why Lighting turned to crystall. There should be enough to go for a FFXIII-3.

I was preatty much right when I told everyone after Halo 3 and bungie giving 343 Cheif “Dont be surprised but I think there will be a fourth”
SE bought the domain name for a ” FFXIII-3 ” and that tells us that they spent their own money to buy a name for a game. This flag should already tells us it was discussed they went forward bought the domain. If there was no chance of a FFXIII-3 why waste time and money literally on buying a name that they wont use. Be alert fans because there was not a “No we are not” just a “We are releasing DLC for Sazh and Lighting” There is a good chance for a FFXIII-3 we just have to wait and see.

  5. this stuff will lead through 3 choices:

choice blue: there will be a Final Fantasy XIII-3 released that may end the XIII saga there with the same plot details in the Green choice.

choice green: there will be DLC released with the true ending or an extpansion of the ending we have right now which may be of Noel and a possible second person to fight against the Chaos and Caius Ballad in hopes of fixing the timeline again, hopefully revive Serah and even more hopefully, restore Gran Pulse and Cocoon II to their original states before the Chaos attacked and the timeline went whack again because Caius’s heart (which is actually Etro’s heart) was stabbed, thus kiling Etro again.

Choice Red: they are probobly setting up a April Fools joke for next year, though Square never jokes game anouncments, only helps sometimes. *cough* GOOGLE *cough*

  6. I do hope there will be final fantasy xiii-3! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.
I Love ffxiii and lightning most of all! She’s just the coolest, cutest ff girl ever (besides tifa) xD.
    And I love Noel kreiss!
    Hope they make ffxiii-3!!!

  7. I completely agree with a final fantasy 13-3 , i love the ff series, and personally i don’t see how 13 was that bad. i think sarah dying and lightning turning to crystal is definitely enough to make a 13-3 and don’t forget vanielle and fang !! 13 /13-2 were great games, and I’m sure many gamers out there would love to see a 13-3 <3
sign the petition ? and let square know how much we love them ! :)

  8. Ive played ff for 18 yrs starting at 2 n 3 I dont call em 5 n 6. 8 n online are only games I havent touched 13 series is jst behind 3 n 7 storywise I miss bad guys like kefka n sepiroth caius is closest as villian to them 13-3 will be worth it hell se gotta make up for 14 they apologized for it for gods sake so theyll make it up to us

  9. With the last two DLC episodes due out this May covering events that occured during the game and still give no clear conclusion to the story, it’s inevitable Square Enix will make a XIII-3. Some of the paradox endings e.g. Vanille’s Truth and the one where Noel is instructed to protect Hope, do give ideas on where a third (and final part)of the XIII story can go. Ending the story with Lightening turned to crystal on the throne and the fact SE have not once denied that a final part to the story is possible means that there is indeed hope. Maybe by combining an open world as in XIII – 2 and the same story telling from XIII are just a couple of ways SE can exploit further for a XIII-3.

I also think that combining characters from both games (e.g. Snow, Vanille, Fang and Sazh and Noel)would work well. With chaos now spread throuout the world and messages from the future, there is enough material to finish the saga with one more game. Lets hope that after the last of the DLC episodes comes out at the end of May, SE can start work on making FFXIII-3 a reality.

    Anyone agree?

    • Totally agree :) and thats what i think too, theres enough material to continue on with a 13-3

  10. This guy (link below) sums it up perfectly.

    http://www.violentgamerreviews.com/2012/04/promise-of-final-fantasy-xiii-3.html

  11. Hopefully SE makes ff13-3 because after 13-2s ending I wanna know what happens next.and as everyone said there’s enough to make a third part.ff13 was pretty good because of the story about the fal’cie and everything. I also liked using snow because he was the badass.when I passed 13-2 I wanted to know what happens next. Hopefully they make ff13-3

  12. I want a 13-3 to be released. Square has mentioned that there is no more DLC for the game and Lightnings episode did not tie up lose ends for me. What about Snow? His fiancé is dead and he’s just going to hang out in the coliseum? What about Sazh, Hope, Fang, and Vanille? What happens to them after Valhalla consumes Gran Pulse? Not a good ending Square. Fans of this series want more… I know I do.

  13. Maybe an announcement at the E3 show in a couple of weeks or a mention at the MCM in London this coming week? Even back when the game came out not once did the Director or any senior member of SE say that there would not a trilogy, as they dodged the question and said players should look for the paradox endings and the DLC episodes, which anwser a few questions but also end with a cliff hanger secret ending. As the DLC only finished days ago they could be planning it now and looking for feedback on where to go with a final part of the story. They left things so open that everything hints that a final game is coming.

  14. Well after I passed the game I was kinda upset that it said “tbc”. And from what I’ve heard the dlc doesn’t answer all of the questions about the game, hopefully they make 13-3 because everything is not answered. There’s also enough material for 13-3. I really liked 13 , 13-2 because they were interesting nd the story was good. Hopefully if 13-3 comes out you can play as snow, Noel, hope , sazh , vaneille , and fang. Kuz I bet snow will be fkn pissed off if he finds out that serah died

  15. I loved XII- though it was linear and the mythology part was shoved in the far recesses of sub-menus. I connected with the characters and became attached.

XIII-2… in all honesty it depressed me. The game made me want to read more into the mythology. And not all of the story and fragments combined filled my curiosity.

And then there’s the ending… which utterly killed me. I went and found all the other endings…and not one of them granted me the exit out of that dark void that I had been cast into. Bittersweet (such as XII) is one thing. But flat out destroying all hope is another. the TBC brought my hopes up of finding some common ground. But then Lightning’s DLC made me crave more. There was no resolution to the to never ending
    torment.

From the start of the game, I was doomed to fail.

I want this story to continue and bring me back from the darkness that I was cast into.

If this is what SE was trying to accomplish, fine. A depressing Final Fantasy, deed done let’s move on. But if there’s even the slightest bit of hope, then I was to know.

  16. With the team saying last week that they will not do a remake on past games and only wants to concentrate with new ones. With the time gates now gone, the way of travel in a XIII-3 game would be to call Sazh in his ship from the end of the second game at any time and go the the begging of a new location or back to a previous one (which can offer re-playability at any time.) As to a story. Could be that Hope, Noel and the recently released Fang and Vanille, and could go and try to find a way to bring Lightming back from her crystal sleep. And during the game she has a few fights with Caius in her dream in the Dying World. An idea that could very much work and still have a nice ending that wraps up the series.

  17. All very hush hush from SE about the subject and everything else! Wonder if they will make an annoucement at E3? Serie4s certainly needs a conclusion and a lot of questions anwsered

  18. Im with u also dude.13-3 is going to come out for sure because dlc has finished and we need answers for everything else.if I’m wrong about the dlc thingy correct me

    • Agree, there was too much left not anwsered, thats why a final game is needed. Apart from a FF musical for the 3DS, don’t seem to be any FF news at E3. More likely be more news on a XIII-3 at the TGS in September as it’s where Japanese games get a huge amount of coverage, whereas E3 is more directed towards western audiences. Has anyone noticed the increasing calls for a XIII-3 on both Facebook and when searched on Google?? SE said in there downloadable magazine that they listen and take in a lot of feedback from the fans and act on it. Well they can’t ignore the calls of so many fans for a conclusion. And whilst no confirmation form SE, there has been no denail either, which would have happened by now.

  19. Nothing at E3. Must mean that it will be either announced at the TGS in September or the SE conference in January. 7 months is a long time to wait, but it was the same with XIII-2 when they annouced it, the game was in development for a year and 13 months after XIII came out. If only they would give some answers about it, instead of side stepping the question. Been left open enough!

  20. Ohh wow nothing happened at E3 wow well yea maybe till september or January
