Of all the days in the year Ubisoft could have chosen to semi-officially unveil Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, they chose April Fools' Day to do it. We first heard of the game thanks to international ratings classifications boards in Australia and Brazil, revealing that there's a "high impact sex scene" involved, but it wasn't until April 1, 2013, that we got our first look at Blood Dragon.

And what we saw was pure insanity. Perhaps that's the connection to Far Cry 3, because the retro website and retro-futuristic arcade style the game was seemingly going for have - at first glance - nothing to do with Far Cry, but whatever it is, it looks awesome.

That's the most intriguing mystery for us, trying to hypothesize on how Ubisoft is tying this over-the-top sci-fi shooter to the original Far Cry 3 main game. Is the post-apocalyptic Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon a drug-induced fantasy? Is Vaas somewhere to be found? Is it a video game within the world?

Now, view the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon teaser trailer and cover art. We're sold, even if we don't yet understand.

From the screenshots, it appears the game is using the same engine and there's a modern jeep and helicopter in the background, making the seemingly robotic player (Mark IV Cyber Commando Sergeant Rex Power Colt) and space-age weapons even more curious. With the success of Hotline Miami though, players are eager for more neo-retro experiences and Blood Dragon may just be capitalizing on that hype.

With E3 2013 inching even closer, it's possible Ubisoft will save the unveiling for their press conference, which begs of the question of when it will release.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will likely debut later this year as a download on current-gen consoles and PC.
