First Screenshots For ‘Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon’ Don’t Make Sense (Yet)

1 year ago by

Of all the days in the year Ubisoft could have chosen to semi-officially unveil Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, they chose April Fools’ Day to do it. We first heard of the game thanks to international ratings classifications boards in Australia and Brazil, revealing that there’s a “high impact sex scene” involved, but it wasn’t until April 1, 2013, that we got our first look at Blood Dragon.

And what we saw was pure insanity. Perhaps that’s the connection to Far Cry 3, because the retro website and retro-futuristic arcade style the game was seemingly going for have – at first glance – nothing to do with Far Cry, but whatever it is, it looks awesome.

That’s the most intriguing mystery for us, trying to hypothesize on how Ubisoft is tying this over-the-top sci-fi shooter to the original Far Cry 3 main game. Is the post-apocalyptic Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon a drug-induced fantasy? Is Vaas somewhere to be found? Is it a video game within the world?

Check out the latest in-game screenshots uncovered on NeoGAF:

Now, view the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon teaser trailer and cover art. We’re sold, even if we don’t yet understand.

From the screenshots, it appears the game is using the same engine and there’s a modern jeep and helicopter in the background, making the seemingly robotic player (Mark IV Cyber Commando Sergeant Rex Power Colt) and space-age weapons even more curious. With the success of Hotline Miami though, players are eager for more neo-retro experiences and Blood Dragon may just be capitalizing on that hype.

With E3 2013 inching even closer, it’s possible Ubisoft will save the unveiling for their press conference, which begs of the question of when it will release.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will likely debut later this year as a download on current-gen consoles and PC.

  1. My brain can’t comprehend this at all. This is truly stunning to see them doing this. All this purple does remind me of SR4 though.

    • Oh ya, good call. It does share a similar aesthetic.

  2. I think Jason’s on the jungle drugs again.

    • This might actually be a funny but real good ending to this game.
      Damn that will make headlines.

  3. I might be fine with this if the name “FarCry” was not involved. I wish this was a hoax.

    • There’s always that one stick in the mud and its you.

      • Until we see more details, I’m going to stick with that opinion. The main issue for me here is — well it looks nothing like Far Cry. Certainly not Far Cry 3. A complete change in genre while keeping the name? I don’t understand it.

  4. But people are still gonna buy this.
And i dont blame them, i like when something new and fresh is thrown at me.
Blood Dragon is a bold experiment and i will give the game my opinion by playing it for sure. they deserve it.

  5. Its a shame ubisoft got hacked and this was leaked out on to the net… just makes these companies hate us PC gamers even more. I can argue that the more DRM u put on games the more people are going to want to hack it and steal it just out of spite. But it doesnt make it right and if this game doesnt sell because of this, i think that will be a damn shame. Ive seen the leaked footage of it today and it seems like a really fun nod to 80′s nostalgia done right. Really cool fresh idea
