The Resident Evil franchise already had a series of adaptations headed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich. That particular run of films came to an end in 2016 and fans of the games generally had negative thoughts about it. Early movies at least resembled the games somewhat, but later entries were clearly their own story only featuring characters from the source material.

The new movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, promises to be a more faithful adaptation of the dearly beloved franchise, and trailers already show a healthy loyalty to the 1996 debut entry and the two following games released for the PS1. In addition to the iconic characters showcased in the trailers, there are also a ton of iconic monsters fans should recognize. It is impossible to tell how great the movie will be until its release date on November 24th, but until then fans can at least see what monsters they should expect to see on the big screen.

5 Lisa Trevor

Lisa Trevor was not introduced in the series until the GameCube remake of Resident Evil. She is the daughter of George Trevor, the architect who designed the Spencer mansion where the first game is set. She and the whole family are kidnapped by the Umbrella Corporation and put through brutal experiments. She is transmogrified into the hideous beast players go up against.

It is the first time there is real emotional weight behind an event in the series, as fans almost feel obligated to put this poor girl out of her misery. Judging from the trailers, it seems like Lisa Trevor will have a relatively big part in the new movie. In the meantime, go ahead and play the Resident Evil remake to see her first appearance. While it was initially released on the Nintendo GameCube, it has since been ported to Switch, PS4, and Xbox.

4 Dogs

Dogs are almost as iconic to Resident Evil as the zombies themselves. In the 1996 debut title, the protagonists encounter them before running into zombies. One of the most iconic jump scares in the entire franchise involves these undead canines. Jill or Chris are walking through a hallway when, suddenly, a whole group of dogs breaks through the glass windows.

Even if the player knows it is coming, they are still liable to jump at the surprise. The effect for the dog does not look great in the trailers, but maybe it will have been touched up by the time the movie hits the big screens. Dogs were also featured in the first Resident Evil movie from 2002 where practical effects and makeup were used to create a convincing zombified dog.

3 Zombies

Of course, zombies are the most common monster featured in the trailer. The undead have been a cultural mainstay since George Romero's 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead. Amazingly, they haven't changed much since then, either.

Depending on the film or game, they are either slow or fast. It will be interesting to see how the protagonists in Welcome to Raccoon City deal with this threat. Of course, there is also always the emotional moment where a beloved friend or family member turns into a zombie and the hero has to put them out of their misery.

2 William Birkin

William Birkin is one of the main antagonists of Resident Evil 2. Along with Mr. X (also known as the Tyrant), William hunts the player throughout the game. He progressively transforms and grows, losing any semblance of humanity with each step in the evolution, until the monster is just an amorphous blob. Small shots from the trailer show Leon Kennedy firing a rocket on a train.

Any fan would recognize this is as the end of Resident Evil 2 where Leon or Claire finally takes out Birkin. Neil McDonough plays the scientist, so with a relatively big name in the role it is easy to imagine the human form of the character will have a sizable role. The other big bad of Resident Evil 2, Mr. X, is nowhere to be seen in any of the trailers. It is an iconic beast, so it would be strange to retell the story of Resident Evil 2 without featuring it.

1 The Licker

Licker welcome to racoon city

Lickers were introduced in Resident Evil 2 and were the common heavy enemy players face off against. Any veteran Resident Evil player knows to save up their shotgun ammo for these quick and agile foes. The enemy also shows up again in Resident Evil 5, where the updated gameplay makes them even more threatening.

As scary as these monsters are, they are completely blind and only locate their prey by either touch or sight. It is unknown if there will only be one licker in the movie or if the heroes will fight against a bunch of them. The first Resident Evil movie from 2002 featured the licker as the final monster the heroes fight while escaping the Umbrella facility.
