Eternals is looking to break many boundaries when the film releases this fall. One of the boundaries it'll break is the fictional but prevalent line between Marvel and DC comic books by making references to both Superman and Batman.

The Eternals scene in question where director Chloe Zhao was able to bring Superman into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was in a quick humorous moment. A child by the name of Jack (whose father is actually the Eternal named Phastos) points at Ikaris saying, "Dad that's Superman! With the cape, and you were shooting laser beams out of your eyes!” Then Ikaris replies, “I don’t wear a cape,” which is meant as a joke for comic book fans.

Ikaris is one of the main Eternals. He has the ability of flight, laser beams, and, of course, super strength due to his alien blood. This sounds oddly familiar to DC's Superman, so it's right on brand for Marvel to poke fun at this. Another moment that bridged the gap was when Gilgamesh reunites with Kingo and meets his valet. Gilgamesh makes a joke by calling the valet “Alfred” as a nod to Batman's butler, who does a lot for the caped crusader. "You write it on the page, show it to Kevin, if he doesn’t say anything, that’s a go,” Zhao told Variety. “I don’t think there was a conversation. Not really, except, he goes, ‘Oh, that’s cool."

Many Eternals Characters Cropped

Despite having super-soldiers, billionaire geniuses, and Norse gods who constantly save the universe, it's clear the MCU still has fictional characters that they look at. So it's cool that Marvel Studios gave a nod to Superman and Batman, and it makes sense to Zhao considering the Eternals would have immersed themselves in Earth's pop culture over the centuries. She said, "So they pick out the things about humans that they love the most — aspect of us that are quite extraordinary. And for Gilgamesh, he watches ‘Batman.’ So when he sees someone’s valet, he goes, ‘Ah, I know!’ Because he loves Batman, like so many of us."

Eternals has lifted its review embargo and is looking to break boundaries as fans know it. This film will introduce a large group of heroes into the fold and is looking to make sure each of the heroes has a lasting impact in the years to come.

Eternals releases in theaters on November 5th, 2021.
