Epic Mickey 2 Power of Illusion 3DS

Pieces of the Epic Mickey 2 puzzle continue to fall into place. Two weeks ago, invitations were sent our for an "epic event" hosted by Disney and Warren Spector, at which Epic Mickey 2 is widely expected to be revealed. That event is slated for March 27 -- one week from today.

Though precious few Epic Mickey 2 details have come to light so far, that is beginning to change. Today we get our first possible clue of what to expect from next week's announcement: Epic Mickey 2: Power of Illusion is coming to Nintendo's 3DS.

The original Epic Mickey was an imaginative, satisfying experience that suffered from a few notable flaws, particularly its troublesome camera (read Game Rant's Epic Mickey review). Still, the game managed so sell quite well -- 1.3 million copies in it's first month -- all but ensuring that Spector's Junction Point Studios would get the chance to craft a sequel.

While the first game was a Wii exclusive, a newsletter from Disney Interactive revealed that Epic Mickey 2 will also appear on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Today's news that the game is bound for 3DS as well comes from a Nintendo Magazine France tweet (via All Games Beta).

"La présentation d'Epic Mickey 2 aura lieu la semaine prochaine. Une version 3DS, Power of Illusion, plus 'classique' en 2D est aussi prévue."

Don't read French? Google Translate to the rescue!

"Presentation of the Epic Mickey 2 will take place next week. 3DS version, Power of Illusion, more classic 2D is also provided for."

There is a lot of information to parse for such a short blurb. For starters, the title Power of Illusion is undeniably reminiscent of Mickey's classic Sega Genesis adventures, Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion. Coupled with the "more classic 2D" description, it's easy to come to the conclusion that Power of Illusion, at least on 3DS, may be a side scroller in the vein of the Genesis games. On the other hand, it could also signify that that the new game simply contains more of the 2D levels featured in the first Epic Mickey. Either way, we should know for sure next week.

Early rumors about Epic Mickey 2 suggested that the title will support co-op gameplay. Without confirming anything, Warren Spector discussed changes he'd like to make in an Epic Mickey sequel with GamesIndustry International, and the list matches up neatly with the new game's rumored features, including multiplatform support and co-op.

"If I were to do it again, there are clearly things that we had to cut and things we could have done better. The number one thing I get asked is, 'Why can't I play this on my platform, damn it?' So if I were to do another one - now that we've reintroduced Mickey as a video game hero on the right platform, which was the Wii - I think we've got other people intrigued. There are now more PS3s and 360s in sort of 'family hands,' let's put it that way. So I think the time would be right to get the game on other platforms."

"The second thing I get asked is 'you made a game that appeals to adults and kids equally,' which is true by the way and was one of our goals, so 'Why can't I play together? Why can't I play with my son and why can't I play with my mother? Why I can't play with my friends?' So, I would probably do co-op. I would definitely address player concerns about the camera. That was the number one complaint we heard, but I will defend to the death the quality of the work my camera team did on that first game; there is a whole GDC talk about that sometime, too. The camera in the first game was an amazing piece of work that people don't appreciate. We took the hardest problem in gaming and then made it even harder through our game mechanics - which people don't get - but we know we could do better. And so I would do that and I would do full voice. I mean I made a decision on the first game not to have characters speak. It was a mistake and I would fix that."

A better camera, co-op and full voice? That's an Epic Mickey I'd like to play -- how about you? What else would you like to see in Epic Mickey 2: Power of Illusion -- Kinect/Move support, online play? Epic Mickey 2: Power of Illusion is believed to be in development for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and 3DS.
