How can you have nominees on games that aren’t even being released until 2012?

  • Prax

You have Hitman, a game for which there was nothing more than a CG trailer, on your action/adventure list, but not AC: Brotherhood? Really?

    • Jason Weissman

Wrong. Extensive gameplay for Hitman: Absolution was shown to members of the press but not to the public. Frankly, we didn’t even consider the trailer for Hitman into our deliberations. Click on the link if you want to know what was shown.

      • Prax

My mistake, I only saw that there was gameplay footage after I made this post. Still, after what I saw (and obviously I haven’t played it but it looks a little dumbed down compared to previous Hitman games), that doesn’t answer my question as to why it’s up there over AC: Revelations.

        • Rob Keyes

AC: Revelations is awesome, but it’s very similar to Brotherhood. The new Hitman gameplay is taking that franchise to an entirely new level and was more impressive.

    • Rob Keyes

      @ Prax,

Who told you there was only a CG trailer? We were there and saw gameplay.

ps. It’s AC: Revelations, not Brotherhood (Really!) and we played it too.

  • Rottbeast

Where the hell is Bioshock: Infinite? This is TREASON!

    • Jason Weissman

It’s listed as a Best in Show nominee :)

    • Rob Keyes

Definitely impressed by BioShock so we put it in the biggest category. It doesn’t even come close to a large pile of games in shooter category though.

  • JRM

May be the only one here, but I’m mostly excited about the new Twisted Metal. :)

    • jesse685

Me too, it will be out in the same month as my birthday, so I’m looking forward to that and playing online.

  • jesse685

Why isn’t Need for Speed: The Run listed as a Best Racing Game nominee, instead there’s Cars 2. That is so WRONG!!!

    • Rob Keyes

Next year we’ll have more than 12 categories and will break out racing and sports for sure.

NFS: The Run was neat and we also dug NBA 2K12. Can’t nominate them all.

  • Ken J

Best shooter is a given, Battlefield 3, I would also vote that for best Multiplayer.

    • Rob Keyes

BF3 and Gears are tied for me.

      • Ken J

I never understood the love for Gears of War. I played the first at a friend’s house because he swore it was the god of all shooters. It was OK for a little while, and the graphics that he claimed were the best graphics was merely a whole lot of bump-mapping, something that has been around in the PC world for many years prior to that game, so it was nothing impressive to me, in fact, I think they WAY overused it, made everything look like clay or stucco, even surfaces that were meant to be smooth ended up being bump-mapped… And the gameplay, eh, not my type of shooter, run around, do “cool” things to bad guys, splatter effects, yay, not really that impressive to me. BF2, on the other hand, provided me YEARS of entertainment. Heck, if my friend told me right now to jump on BF2 with him, I’d be there… Here’s hoping BF3 will be better or at least the same…

  • jwalka

    Best Shooter: Battlefield 3

    Best Action/Adventure: Rayman Origins

Best Multiplayer: a tie between AC: Revelations and BF 3, but i lean more towards BF3.

Best RPG: screw you guys >:( hehehe its a tie between these 3: Deus Ex: HR, KoA: Reckoning and Skyrim. they all look good and have their highlights. so i have no favourite :(

Best in Show: tie between BF 3, BioShock Infinite and Skyrim. none of them really stood out much for me (in terms of demos, trailers etc) and BF3’s tank demo sucked, DICE could have easily stolen the show if they demoed some decent gameplay of SP or MP.

left out all the garbage i have no interest in 😀

    • Ken J

Wow, how can you say the tank demo sucked? I don’t think I’ve seen a better tank battle sequence than that. Very realistic feeling, and it was downright amazing how large and open the landscape was that you play in, how you literally drive across wide expanses of desert. I think it was a great demo since it showcased how wide open the worlds can be with the new engine, the sound, the animations, I mean, I don’t think I’ve seen another game where they actually show you how rounds are actually loaded inside a tank without an autoloader… If they showed another on-foot sequence, that’ll be like any other fps out there. I think it also is worth mentioning that it was not on rails. The player actually drives the tank in that sequence, so it’s not like a lot of other vehicle sequences in other shooters…

    • Ken J

I am interested in Bioshock too, really liked the first one and playing the second one now. The only thing that worries me is from the few videos of the game so far, it looks like there is just a whole lot of action in the game. I think what made the original good was the setting, the story, and the characters you met. The action was kind of fun, but for me that was actually secondary to everything else.

      • jwalka

besides sound and visuals the BF3 demo it didn’t showcase alot (that i already didnt know about) and was very boring to watch, i mean you could watch 3 min of it and know the rest (its what i did).

the one thing that i really hated about bioshock 2 was the half baked narrative, but i hear minerva’s den (final DLC) has a very good narrative (and twist) then the vanilla game. #2 also had a ‘been there done that’ feel which i didn’t need b/c i wanted a deeper insight into rapture (after jack left), not that same s*** painted another colour with bells attached. infinite looks new/fresh, a step in the opposite direction (both literally and metaphorically) from the previous bioshock titles. they’ve completely re-done things (new plasmids, better shooting mechanics etc) to show that its not ‘bioshock in the sky’, the only similarity between infinite and previous bioshocks is the title (and creepiness), nothing else really.

        • Ken J

Well, in real life you’re not going to get dropped off 3 feet from the enemy so you fight right away and be done with it in 3 minutes. If that’s what you’re looking for, I think COD would be a better match. The demo they showed feels a lot like how things COULD unfold in a more realistic and believable environment and setting. I can’t help but feel like this was ripped right out of Desert Storm while watching that. And that makes it so much more exciting that I see they put the time and effort into making the game feel so authentic even though it’s a pretty arcady game in real life. So it’ll have that realistic feel without that realistic frustration of constantly dying, lol, kind of a best of both worlds type of thing, which I’m really looking forward to now because of that demo.

  • Eldron

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim should, without doubt, win best RPG. Possibly best of E3, but there were some other awesome games there.

    • Ken J

A lot of positive buzz over that game, what exactly is it all about? And what makes it different from the other RPG’s? I’m kind of interested, might read up on it later…

      • Bentley2210

        What’s all the buzz?! 😮

It’s the next Elder Scrolls Game! From what the press have been saying from the “closed door’s demos”. It’s all very positive. It’s like Morrowind/Oblivion, only improved upon. The magic system in it sounds very interesting.

        • Ken J

Ok, pretend like I have no clue about any of those games because I’ve mainly just been a FPS player and have never really been too interested in the dragons and magic type stuff… 😀

Is there anything in the game that would appeal to more than just fans of the other Elder Scrolls games??

  • Riley Little

Luigi’s Mansion 2 was an absolute blast, and it’s easily one of my most anticipated titles for the Nintendo 3DS.
Gears of War 3 deserves every nomination it’s received. I can’t wait to play through the campaign in that game!

  • Bradley Davis

    Shooter: Battlefield 3

Action/Adventure: Can’t choose between Zelda and Uncharted

    Sports/Racing: Forza 4

    Motion: Fable

    Multiplayer: Assassins Creed

    RPG: Mass Effect

    MMO: Star Wars

    Indie: Awesomenauts

    Original: Journey

    Handheld: Uncharted

    Hardware: PS Vita

    Best in Show: Bioshock Infinite

    • Ken J

Oh yah, Forza 4 should be pretty good. Too bad Microsoft wouldn’t bring it over to the PC too…

      • Rob Keyes

Good call. Forza should be on PC too IMO.

        • Ken J

They can still advertise that it is “exclusive for Microsoft” since they can put it under the “Games for Windows” label on the PC. Basically they will say it is for everything but the PS3, which is the objective of having that racing game exclusive to Xbox in the first place, it’s competition for Gran Turismo, although in my opinion Forza is much, much better… I don’t have an Xbox or PS3, but I’ve played both games and I must say the cars, physics, and just about everything is better in Forza than GT…

  • Scott R.

Indie game are ones not backed financially by a major publisher. I love Popsicles.

    • Scott R.

      I also like lollypop mods.

  • AC360

Not much mention of Far Cry 3 here on Game Rant (unless I’ve missed stuff).

I revisited Far Cry 2 not so long ago and thought about the potential of a 3rd installment.

Judging from the trailers shown at e3 looks like they’ve addressed a few of the issues I had from the 2nd and it looks to me like it could be great!

Anyone else excited about it ?

    • Ken J

To be honest, the only thing I liked about the original Far Cry was the open landscape and long draw distances. It was more of a technological accomplishment than a great game in my opinion. I kind of lost interest in the game a few hours into it. And Far Cry 2 didn’t really draw my attention at all. That kind of came and went and most people didn’t even notice… Far Cry 3 will have to accomplish something drastic to get noticed in my opinion. And so far it looks like they’ve simply gone back to the tropical landscape of the original, there doesn’t seem like there’s much of anything unique about the game. Well, from the trailers they did have a 1911 that fired with its hammer down and shoots 20 shots without reloading, lol, that got me to laugh…
