The popular game It Takes Two is being adapted for film by Amazon Prime Video, and Dwayne Johnson is involved. It was revealed that his production company, Seven Bucks Productions, has joined dj2 Entertainment to produce the film for the streaming service. The project was set up for priority development, which means that the crew will be getting to work soon at bringing the project to life.
The game It Takes Two was released on multiple platforms in March 2021, and within a year, It Takes Two sold more than 5 million copies globally. Its popularity doesn’t make the announcement to adapt it for film surprising, as the game already has a rather large fan following. Game adaptations usually rely on such fan bases to attract crowds when the film is eventually released. It remains to be seen how close an adaptation it will end up being.
The cast of the upcoming It Takes Two adaptation has not been confirmed at the moment, but Johnson could potentially star in the film according to Variety. Seven Bucks Productions has recently produced films like Netflix's Red Notice, Disney's Jungle Cruise, and Jumanji: The Next Level, all of which starred Johnson in the lead roles. Fans, therefore, expect him to portray the role of the protagonist from the games, Cody.
The film adaptation of It Takes Two will follow the story of the two protagonists, May and Cody, who approach the idea of a divorce amidst marital troubles. In the game, their daughter Rose plays with two dolls that she makes to represent her parents. Somehow, their souls get trapped inside these dolls, and they have to go through multiple adventures and solve many puzzles together in order to return to their human forms. It seems like the film will mostly be sticking to the original plot, with the script being written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the duo responsible for bringing the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptations to life.
The game does not allow for a single-player mode, and players must cooperate to get through the different challenges. It can either be played in couch co-op mode or online. Since its release, It Takes Two has received several positive reviews from critics and has even won several awards, including the Game of the Year at the 2021 The Game Awards. It has been labelled as one of the best story-driven co-op games of the year.
