Some fans are predicting the recent time traveling events taking place on Dragon Ball Super may have a connection with the upcoming Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 video game.

There are plenty of fan theories littering the virtual landscape and, while few ever hit their mark completely, there are some that are just too good to dismiss outright. One such theory floating around right now is that the Dragon Ball video game and television worlds might soon collide when the events on Dragon Ball Super eventually lead into Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.

Before proceeding, however, it is fair to warn of spoilers since the theory cannot be explained without disclosing pivotal plot details of Dragon Ball Super. Anyone wanting to avoid spoilers should shield their eyes lest they be tainted. Maybe check out some of the Pokémon Go craziness sweeping the world these days.

Moving on. The current story arc in Dragon Ball Super has Future Trunks going back in time once more to warn the earth about Goku Black, which is an evil entity of unknown origins that looks exactly like Goku, with the exception of an earring, black gi, and a time ring that is a big part of this entire theory. On the ring there is an insignia that looks similar to the symbols on the heads of Janemba and Broly in the recent Xenoverse 2 trailer. While they are not identical, it is hard not to see the likeness. Goku Black is also going to make an appearance in the game as a pre-order bonus, which might fan the flames a bit.

While that might not be enough to convince some, the theory does not end there. Time traveling is an integral part of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 – it was the focus of the game's first trailer – and a driving force behind of the current arc in Dragon Ball Super. In both, Future Trunks gets reprimanded for his abuse of time. The game has him becoming a member of Time Patrol, a group that protects time, to make up for this and some fans predict that the same thing could happen in the television series. They believe that both Trunks are one in the same. This is somewhat plausible considering Future Trunks does not have much of a future to go back to since Goku Black pretty much wiped out everyone and everything there. He might eventually seek a new direction in life once this new threat is over and, as those who have played the game gain attest, guardian of time suits him.

While this theory is a bit of a stretch – especially considering time rings have no made an appearance in Xenoverse thus far – it is hard not to romanticize the idea of those two Dragon Ball worlds colliding. As of yet something like that has never been done. Most of the Dragon Ball video games are rehashes of story arcs from the tv series, but Xenoverse has taken that formula and improved on it drastically by incorporating its own narrative and making players feel more involved by giving them their own identities.

Perhaps developer Dimps wants to push things even further by bringing Xenoverse into the main Dragon Ball canon, or perhaps this is all just reddit fueled hogwash, either way it is fun to imagine and it would not be the worst thing the game could do to drive sales. At this point, all fans and theorists can do is wait until the game is released this October, which should be enough time for the television series to catch up to those events – provided it ever intends to.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 will release October 25, 2016 for Xbox One and PS4, with the PC version coming October 28, 2016.
