Rumor Patrol: ‘Dragon Age’ To Receive Multiplayer Component

Dragon Age Multiplayer Rumor

Continuing forth with its campaign to include multiplayer in every one of its games, Electronic Arts might be adding multiplayer to BioWare’s fantasy RPG series, Dragon Age. How this mechanic will work is as of yet unknown, but early rumors purport that DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine will be utilized and dragons will be playable.

The addition of a cooperative mode in Mass Effect 3 can be seen as logical extension of the game’s mechanics. However, with a game like Dragon Age 2 or Origins, head scratching might start to occur. Traditionally, when we think of cooperative fantasy RPGs, one of the first things that come to mind is Diablo or other games that feature an isometric point of view.

Given the fan backlash over Dragon Age 2, BioWare must be highly invested in not only creating a new game to appease fans, but also a multiplayer component that is fully fleshed out. The rumored Dragon Age multiplayer will allegedly be akin to the PvE and PvP of MMOs, with dragons playing a boss role.

A multiplayer mode in Dragon Age could be an excellent addition if implemented well, and though falling back to a traditional MMO type experience is a safe move, it is one that would compliment the Dragon Age universe nicely. No doubt many fans have played through either Origins or DA2 and thought, “This would be better with friends.” Should this rumor turn out to be true, those thoughts may soon become a reality.

Should BioWare look at Mass Effect for inspiration, the multiplayer experience could be completely complimentary to the single player campaign. That being said, the ability to use dragons or turn into dragons would be pretty excellent, and could be a hint that Dragon Age 3 is bringing back shapechanger specialization for mages.

One thing that BioWare has confirmed for Dragon Age 3 is the ability to customize your party’s appearance again, something that seems small, but is so important in the long run. The developer will be confirming or denying these multiplayer rumors sooner or later, but whether or not a multiplayer component is going to be added, Dragon Age 3 will be something to look forward to.

Dragon Age 3 has no release date, but is probably coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

  2. “DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine will be utilized and dragons will be playable” So…umm yea. Does this mean BioWare can make a game look better than Skyward Sword? Because Dragon Age 2 looks like crap on the best PC (that’s with the rez pack). Or does this mean “Dragonfield 3: Dragons With Jet-packs And Pink Werewolves On There Back” or our we talking dropping the Lycium engine altogether? No where does it say that Frostbite can only run FPS (isn’t there a racer made with Frostbite 2?) maybe it’ll run RPG’s just fine. Or maybe a separate company making the multiplayer (we all know how that turned out for Bioshock 2) part of the game and putting it on a separate disk?

Why don’t they just go with the Diablo 2 multiplayer? Simple is always the best system, 1) make an online game 2) invite a friend or two 3) have fun – see how easy that is? You could even make it so that you can take you 25 rogue into a friends level 5 mage’s insanity game to give him a hand. Or you know they could give us pink werewolves…

It could be worse, they could make us relive Dragon Age 2…

  3. I lost hope in the dragon age series.

Some of it has to do with skyrim. That and Dragon age 2 was rushed so much and so much changes made to it with no real thought in to theyes changes that the Dragon age series seems like a lost cause.

    • Lost hope in it?

      What because of this?

I f anything made you lose hope in the Dragon Age games it should be a lot of the failings DA2 had, not a multiplayer option that would make completer sense in game that aloows you too travel with three companions at a time.

  4. Complete not “completer”

  5. A multiplayer Dragon Age 3 does not make any kind of sense in a game that is established as a RPG. Why not make a spinoff game within the Dragon Age world with multiplayer, instead of ruining the RPG mood in Dragon Age. I can’t say I’m surprised, EA seems to want to ruin every game they touch.
Skyrim is proof that people can still enjoy RPG’s without the multiplayer feature. I sure as hell would never touch a multiplayer game.

    • Your right single player rpg is fun(it’s the only type of games I buy that are single player), but to have cool armor you work for and to have nobody give a rats ass on how many hours you put in it to get that super awesome weapon seems little pathetic to me. Personally I hate having cool armor and a high level that I put so many hours to work for; and nobody sept the 3 friends that visit me occasionally and my girlfriend who doesn’t even care about the game get to see it. It reminds me of the old days in gaming when I would play DOOM by myself and I all I could do is talk about the game with my friends or they could just come to my house and watch.

If a multiplayer Dragon Age or Skyrim did come out atleast for starters, I can add more meaning into spending many hours playing the game (by actually showing online what I actually accomplished). Second it would be pretty cool teaming up with a friend and accomplishing missions.

      • Fraps + Youtube = Your problem solved. That’ll be 60 or 3 easy payments of 19.99.

  6. It could be interesting if they did a four player co-op dungeons but it would be extremley hard to pull of on DA. But on the other hand it could be fun if done well. I could see my self playing a dungeon with my friends in an mmo style. But that’s as far multiplayer will go. If they do anything else I will have lost faith in bioware
